2015 Mondeo TDCI start up problem

Having a difficulty on start up on 2015 Zetec Mondeo diesel. First start in the morning , glow plugs extinguish within seconds but when I turn the key for starting up the key revolves round to the said position but nothing happens but if I keep the key in
that position for a couple of seconds more the engine cranks up and starts immediately. This happens irrespective of outside air temperature. The rest of the day is no problem and she will crank immediately on request. Anyone familiar with the new 2015 Ford
Mondeo may have some input as to why this is happening before I put her into the dealer.

Is it the speed with which you are depressing the clutch, a requirement with many modern cars in the start procedure?

I had that a couple of times on my last car.

It had a dodgy clutch switch, it took me a while to work out what was happening, but lifting and depressing the clutch further down sorted it.

Write your comments here...My last Mondeo "06" plate had the "depress the clutch before cranking" start up procedure so familiar with that. I am monitoring the situation but anxious fro "2015" diesel Mondeo owners to report back.

Write your comments here...Thanks Xtrailman, I'll have a look at your suggestion. The car has only 10,000 miles and clutch works a treat so not sure if what you suggested would be a problem so soon as she is still running-in but thanks anyway for replying.

Do Fords still come with key starts ?

I assumed that they were all starter buttons these days.

Write your comments here...Yes, 2015 model Mondeo Zetec Econotec TDCI, which I have, is a key start.

The clutch pedal itself will have a switch on it (a bit like the brake light switch) that Xtrail was suggesting might be a problem ..... not the mechanics of the clutch Wink

Write your comments here...Could not tell you how many Mondeos I had. Never had any clutch problems and never ever depressed clutch to start the engine.I am rubbish regarding technicalities I just drove my car as a Sales Rep and had it serviced regularly.
In my honest opinion one of the most reliable cars around,a poor man's Roll Royce.

Mondeos with "the push button start" requires the car to be in neutral and the driver to depress the clutch, before pushing the button

As ADP says...not push button start so no clutch depression is required to start...so dodgy clutch switches or any such nonsense is irrelavant....more likely  preheater switch timing  issue.. ie a quick key turn of the key means the preheaters will need to catch up before starting the engine even if the light is out....we have a couple of them at work and it has been commented on before. In normal ambient temperatures there is never an issue..Ask ya dealers advice first.

We don't drive Mondeos ..... the clutch switch was an educated guess as a lot of manuals DO require the clutch to be depressed before they'll start

    The OP,s car doesnt.......

Ah...a bit of good ol-fashioned guesswork.......

As you and XT have been at pains to point out in the past to others read the threads before replying...you might want to heed your own advice first.....Innocent

Clutch depression starting is not restricted to keyless/push button starting. My manual Audi requires clutch depression although it is a habit I learned from my first day if driving As taught by my father. In very cold weather in the days when engine oil
in winter had the consistency of treacle one would depress the clutch to reduce the drag on the battery and starter motor from also having to turn the contents of the gear box.

My Dad taught me the same for the same reason. Luckily my present car doesn’t have a clutch pedal.

According to the 2015 manual to start the engine depress the clutch, and attempt to start, if it fails to crank, then depress the clutch and brake pedal fully.

XTM that info as with others ie max tow hitch, kerbweight etc are far from authoritative. ..I do agree best practise is to depress the clutch and thats all the manual is suggesting but it's not required  for an engine to start as OP has asked. Our 4 2014 and 3 2015,s Mondees  all start without clutch depression.

Write your comments here...thanks TimJim, I think your reckoning sounds like you are on the right track as the first start of the morning is the constant experience of this issue and although the pre heat (glow plugs) light extinguishes really quickly even
on a very cold morning, it is as if something is "catching-up" . If the car is not used for many hours of the same day, she cranks immediately on request.

Write your comments here...exactly right, the manual tells you that apart from the old recommended way our dads taught us to always depress your clutch before starting, these new Mondeos 2015, state an integral part of starting these engines is that the
clutch MUST be full depressed before cranking and the accelerator must NOT be touch during cranking. If difficulty is experienced, it is recommended that the brake pedal be depressed at the same time as the clutch is depressed during cranking.
