When travelling in France are the red and white stripey boards mandatory with a rear box added and, does this apply in the UK as well?

The box is on a motorhome I presume?  The answers are no and no.  The board is mandatory in Italy though.

Write your comments here...yes, it is a motorhome, my sons actually.  I have a caravan. The reason for the question is that he's recently fitted the box and is planning on meeting us in France or our way back from Spain.  looking around the site here it
seems that everyone with boxes or bikes has a board.

Are you in Spain at the moment then?   Never had a stripey board on our back box for travels through France, Belgium and Switzerland,  Saw people with them though.  I assumed that they either had been or were planning to travel to Italy.

...and in Italy, so I am led to believe, that stripy board must be made of alluminium.

Yes it has to be the alluminium one in Italy and the right way up, ie coding at the bottom. More correctly it is called a Signal Board if you are searching for one..

I assume, as I'm sat in a camp site in Spain and everyone with a rear appendage has a signal board, that Spain also requires them.

It is also a legal requirement in Spain although an aluminium one is not mandatory like in Italy.
