Waste Management
I knew there would be a downside to not emptying the waste for 11 days! So, how do you keep the waste tank and pipes smelling sweet? We have some proprietary additive which I will use but any other options? Is bleach OK to use?

Don't store the waste for long periods is the first thing even then smells can build up. I either use a "Tank Cleaner" sold in the dealers or wash detergent down the sink with hot wather and let it slosh around for a while before draining off. Seems to work.

Thanks to all. New waste management policy to be adopted - empty more frequently! I have the Thetford and will use it before we set off tomorrow.

I would heat the water and pour the cleaner down sinks then follow through with the hot water so the pipes get flushed as well. Would then half fill the waste tank with said hot water so it has a good cahnce to slop around on route and hopefully it would be OK.

I was passing a motorhome on the way home at the weekend and noiticed that a lot of water was pouring out of it from around the middle of the van on the driver side. Could this have been someone dumping grey waste whilst driving?
Is this a practice commonly used? Personally i thought of empty and rinse prior to leaving the site.

It's too common a practice, unfortunately, Auchtavanner. I've even heard of it happening on CC sites. Despicable.
Not all MHs have the waste drain in the same place. Ours is nearside and our fresh water tank can be drained on the offside. You need to see the colour of the drain valve to be sure which it is. Fresh water fittings are blue, waste water valves are grey/black.

Another tip is to leave the plugs in, stops any smells emerging. Also avoid any cooking water from greens, certain things really pong in the tank. We've just bought some Milton type steriliser from Lidl, but I wouldn't put anything too harsh in the tank.
I've used Zoflora this summer, various pleasant smells on offer. Warmer weather affects the tank so emptying it often as possible is the best solution, as already suggested.0 -
Throw in a biological washing tab and it smells reasonable no matter how long you leave it. We have a 160L toilet tank. Never allowed it passed half full but two biological washing tabs makes it smell okay when emptying.

Even if fresh water, is this legal or acceptable practice?
Just wondering as it would be a lot easier

How about a Bio Tab, they work for the toilet cassette so should be OK for hte waste.
Cheap bottles of coca cola work apparently or thetford do a bottle of waste tank cleaner which is good.
agreed, both Michael's recommendations are oft given advice, and reports of success are common....
only last time out, i dropped a bio tab into the waste tank for a stir around on the way home...as said, thier continued use will keep a cassettee pristine, seems the same for a waste tank.
the cola trick (the cheaper, the better) is also a winner it seems....

It is more likely residual waste or clean water. It is almost impossible to empty tanks fully while stationary and if having emptied at the service point you don't the close the taps it is almost inevitable that more will be dumped on the road as you bounce

When leaving a site, I fill the sink with the remaining hot water, dissolve a bio pod in it and close the waste drain tap before emptying sink. Empty tank at home, it seems to keep the tank sweet.....

Tried a laundry tablet. Brilliant! Much better than the Thetford tank cleaner at about £7 a bottle.

Make sure the laundry tablet is biological. We buy the dissolvable ones from Aldi. They are cheap as chips and work very well. When I empty the toilet holding tank, I flush it out and add two capsules and a little clean water. Same with the grey waste tank,
pop in a couple and both tanks smell reasonable when being emptied and we never get ant smells into the van.0
