Part ex a caravan with a dealer for a M/H
Due to a change in circumstances we find ourselves in a position of being able to change our car and caravan to a tracker RB. The age of the vehicle we can get will very much depend on how much we get for the caravan. It's pristine and they are being sold at dealers for approx £15k. We know we won't get close to that unless we do a private sale so I wondered if people had been there /done it through a dealer and were there any tips or tricks or advice they could offer.
We are looking at a 2/3 year old autotrail tracker rb which retail around the £46k mark. Obviously the more we get for the caravan the more we save or the newer we can go.

Do your research and find out what problems people are getting with that model. Then look at the paperwork with the vehicle and make sure that it is all upto date and the water ingress part has been checked. Paying that much for a SH vehicle I would get
it checked by someone independant of the dealer. Don't just take the dealers word for it that it's ok and any bits you find wrong will be fixed. Check out the dealer they never change their spots. Some are very good others are a right load of cowboys. Don't
get sucked in if its not right walk away even when they start groveling on the floor.0 -
cant really give any advice on your specific question, weve never had a caravan to exchange...
however, the Tracker RB (2016 spec) is 7.60m long and is on a 4250kg chassis, so do you have the required licence groups....?

We p/ex'd our car and caravan at the MH dealership. It was by far the simplest way of doing it and the trade in price wasn't too bad. You won't achieve anything like forecourt prices by selling yourself as you're unlikely to be able to put any warranty on either item which dealers will do. Ask yourself if you saw identical caravans for sale each at £15k one on a dealer's forecourt and one as a private sale which would you be likely to buy? You might consider the private sale at £11-£12k, I guess.
It's extremely difficult to sell high-ish price cars and caravans yourself either privately or to the trade. I suggest you make some phone calls to firms that buy cars and caravans and check with the MH dealer and then make your mind up bearing in mind the simplicity of a dual p/ex deal for the MH.

We part exchanged our caravan when we purchased our brand new motorhome. I thought we got a pretty good deal but two things might have impacted on that. Firstly I imagine that there is more profit margin on a new motorhome and secondly our dealer also
had a caravan dealership down the road so they didn't have to pass it on. Can't help with the car as our tow car was our only car but as an aside we later part exchanged and got a pretty good deal on the purchase of a smaller car.David

When we moved to a motorhome we part ex'd our caravan and sold our car through on of those we buy companies
we chose to go to a dealer further
away from us for the motorhome as they gave us £4k more than the local dealer was going to. We also got more for the car than we would have got as part ex. Selling private is fine if you have plenty of time to do so.0 -
Apologies, I should have been clearer, it is only the caravan we are looking to part ex, not the car.
Weve checked licences already and we are fine.
Interesting david about the profit margins on a new m/h. I hadnt considered that.
ideally I'd like to find a dealer reasonably close also that sells both as there's maybe more incentive forbthe carvan.

We traded our caravan in for a new Autosleepers last year having been unsuccessful in selling the van privately. We negotiated a really good discount on the new motorhome having visited the NEC and found out the best price. Because the discount was good
we were happy with the trade price on the van.Always worth trying to sell the van privately first because you will then be in a better negotiating position. Run an ad. in Autotrader for two weeks at a competitive price somewhere between trade and retail.

We got a great deal for our caravan off the dealer when we bought our motorhome. They did sell both though, in fact we had bought the caravan off them. I think with you spending more you have a better chance than going from motorhome to caravan and hoping

We sold or Caravan 18 months ago against a new van. The best deal we got offered against a 12 month old van was £13k. But when we went to the MH show in October we get the same £13k on a new van but also negotiated a £6k discount off the new van. So in the
end a new van cost us £4k more than a 12 month old van.0 -
many dealers are agents for both MH and caravans....
if you are dealing with one of these it shouldnt be a problem to p/ex.

in two weeks and I don;t like the changes so VERY happy that I got the 2016 one and got a great trade in on the van and discount on the new!!0 -

managed to get a new one (as it's the 2016 version JUST before the 2017 hits) at 2.5k more than we'd seen the 2/3 year old ones. To David's point at the beginning of the thread, there's obviously a far better deal for them too on a new van. We really are pleased
with the deal we got...we didn't really think we could get new..I suppose timing (adn a good sales person
) is everything. Now
have to work out just what else we need hahaha0 -
