Thetford FD5 service door lock barrel/cylinder

Hi Guys,

I have a Thetford FD5 door on my "garage" on a Bailey Approach 745SE.

The cylinder comes out on the key when you try to lock and unlock. Also, when locked, the barrel can be pulled out

I can’t see how it should be retained.

To me it looks as though a component is missing or broken that keeps the barrel in position. This leads me to think more than the barrel is the issue. 

Any ideas?

    I had a similar problem with the lock on the water filler cap on a Swift. Put key in and turn and out pops the lock barrel. They make them this way so the idiots who assemble them can just push the lock barrel in. They are supposed to just clip into place.
    Think you might have to change the outer plastic part that holds the barrel. Rather than the barrel. Once mine came out it would never stay in again.

    I guessed as much. The barrell look OK as you suggest.  I hope they sell the sourounding plastic part.

    It's a bit of a strange site but they seem reliable. Contact via email but don't always get quick response. If you have a look at the very top of thier website in the middle you will see a little house and some other symbols. Thats how you get to your account
    if you open one. Also shows you if they shipped them or not. I used the Bafang motor and removed the front chain wheels. This dropped the bike down to 7 speed so I took the back wheel apart and fitted a 3 speed hub which took it back upto 21 speed again with
    the single drive from the front. Climbs most hills without to much trouble. Built my own battery from their parts as well. Put it all in a black box and put a rack on the back. All works very well. You can buy a cheap chinese one but they tend to have hub
    motors which don't work as well. The Bafang wins with the choice of multipul gears Happy

    Its added to the bucket list. I had heard that the Bafang was a good option elsewhere...so now with your recommendation…its the way I will go.

    I have had the same problem with barrel locks on a previous Swift caravan. What you could try is take it out, lock it, put it back in the hole and very gently with a screw driver in the key socket try and turn it in the hole. This may well retain the lock
    barrel in place and allow you to lock and unlock without the barrel coming out. I would stress that you should not force it too hard as you might damage the lock. With my Bailey I had a couple of spare locks given to me. Might be worth looking in the glove
    box?

    Yeah there are two spare barrels in the van, but not for the Thetford FD5 door.  Wasn't sure what they were for.

    I will try your trick tomorrow. Thanks! I did notice that right at the end of the barrel there is what looks like a tumbler…but its not as the key doesn’t reach it.  Its this that “locks” the barrel in place.  I’ll try a large (very large) screwdriver
    in the barrel whilst in place and see if i can “lock” the barrel in.  I was a joiner for 30 years so I know how much pressure to put on.
