Using gas heating while driving

Hi, reading my instruction manual it stated that if required it is safe to use the gas heating system to keep the MH heated while travelling but on central heating setting.

I did not know you could do this or that it was safe to do it.

Any views, advice.

Reading the literature on my AS motorhome (ordered) it makes a big thing about a new type of regulator being fitted which will allow using gas on the move.

It can be done if you have the right regulator, which you seem to have, but we have never found the need as we find the cab heating tends to warm the motorhome. We are in the fortunate position of being able to use the electric heating for an hour or so
before leaving home so never have to get into a cold motorhome as perhaps you would if your van was in storage.

Write your comments here...Thank you David, do you know any more about this regulator or where I should look for it. What it looks like etc. Thinking it will be close to the Gas supply connection.

donal, not sure which heating system you have in your MH (N+B?) so prob an ALDE....

indo know that Truma emply a CS (crash safe) system these days which may be the same for ALDE...

there are two elements to this....

on the high pressure side, there is a green button, nr the cylinder, in the hose (cylinder to regulator) which has to be pressed when first using the system each trip. this is the rupture protection mechanism and closes off the supply in the event of a crash (just like turning off at the bottle).

there is also a mechanism in the regulator itself (again, a small green push button that needs priming once each site set up) which protects the low pressure side of the sysyem, between regulator and appliances....

so, yes, it can be used on the move.....however, we dont.

If you have a Truma system it might be one of >these<. If it is a Alde system I would have thought the better option was to have >an engine heat exchanger.<

The regulator is called a "SECU-motion".

Thanks all, I have the green button type so now I know..

The MH seems very well insulated compared to the Bessacarr I had which seemed cold when travelling in Uk in winter.

Trip in February will test this out but hopefully I won't need to use the heat when travelling.

Thanks again al for the helpful advise, this is a great place to get useful information from the more experienced people.

As has been said above if you have a regulator with a crash sensor you can use the heating system whilst on the move.  If you have the Alde wet system you may also have an engine heat exchanger which provides a third energy source for the system.  We are
able to set the required system temperature; switch of the gas on the control panel and the waste engine heat is automatically selected to heat the motorhome and water whilst travelling.  Another advantage, especially in the winter, is that the heat exchanger
can be reversed at the flick of a switch, so prior to disconnecting the EHU the MH heating system can be used to pre-heat the engine.  Great if you are using electric that is included in the pitch price.

Just out of interest DD, where is this switch you flick?

It probably varies from van to van but ours is just below the swab of the seat slightly to the right and just behind the drivers seat (RHD).  It switches on the pump shown in peedee's link.

Write your comments here...sorry to be of trouble DD but what kind of switch/ what does the switch look like? I'd be very interested to knowable!
