Damp meter on test

Would it not be useful if the club could test several damp meters on offer to see if there is an affordable option for members to purchase. A number are available on the Internet from around £15. Professional products cost around £200 so it would be useful
to test a few of the budget models to see if they are accurate enough to be used by owners to give a early warning of problemsn

    Hi Bogland, Aldi and Lidl frequently have these for sale, I have one, its bog standard(no pun intended), but I've checked my readings against my mobile service engineers' and there is hardly any discrepancy at all. I'm assuming that my engineers' one is
    suitably calibrated regularly....Cool

    Good that you have been able to cross check yours for accuracy 

    It's a big issue for all caravan owners so I think a test of the ones available would be popular

    I think an article about how to use one correctly would be better still..... we had a numpty come to look at our van and started using his damp meter on the outside of the van..... in the rain....

    My £10 one (and my old £7.50 one) give the same readings as an expensive professional meter....I check it every year when the engineer does our servicing!

    PS. I don't know if you have ever noticed but the CC never do comparisons...certainly not in writingLaughing

    We have several friends who have had significant problems with water leaks on their vans whilst still under warranty. It has certainly put us off buying at least one well known make. I am surprised that the club never seem to uncover this as an issue when
    reviewing vans?

    It's awful what people discover when repairing caravans and remove rails and panels to discover that original panels did not meet and the factory bodge is simply been more sealant. Don't think the new construction methods have fixed the problem they have
    not despite the club suggesting this was a great technical breakthrough.

    I am afraid that the club mainly test new caravans so damp issues should not be a problem yet so they cannot comment on it. These are submitted by the manufacturers so I assume that they have all been checked and should be near faultless. The club did report
    a fault on a Swift tested some time back so may be they would highlight these things if they found them.

    The ones that might have problems are the odd second hand report but I suspect the dealers keep them away from any that have them.

    I have a professional protimeter mini that cost around £150.

    I only bought it so enable me to flash it at the dealer to convince him that my repair for damp was a failure.

    It gives a percentage reading and was actually the same meter that the dealer used.

    My cheapo still does the job but it didn't have a read out in %.  Personally i think if you only want to check for damp just get a cheap one.

    Write your comments here...water leak i.e. a leaky pipe or water ingress i.e. damp?  2 different things completely, the first a nuisance but easy to recitfy the second could be expensive and would affect teh value of the van/saleability.

    FWIW.....My very low priced meter does indicate percentages.
