hi guys, im looking for some advice really or some recommendations.  I would like to install a subwoofer to our caravan and have seen a range of flat under seat subs available on the market just to give a little uuumph.  proberbly will have to get a new
head unit and possibly some capacitors for the original speakers that are from factory to cut the bass from them.  Has anyone ever done this to a caravan before?  Im not really looking to shake the van to pieces or even the neghbours van either but just to
give a better depth of  sound.  Trouble is im toying with this idea or maybe to get a sonos system intead as they also give a nice sound.  Anyone have any views or advice on this?

many thanks

My advice is don't. It's bound to resonate outside the van as bass frequencies travel further than others and you're not likely to have sufficient space in front of the speaker for the sound to circulate. It's a very complicated subject.

There's an auxiliary sub woofer in the boot of my car, which was simply inserted into the rear speaker wires (plus 12v power). A replacement head unit, would be difficult to install as the radio is part of the dashboard. Not a problem for you, but the car example shows that a new head unit isn't essential. Capacitors alone don't function as filters, the circuity requires inductors too, and is best bought as a ready made filter circuit, though it's probably not essential. I agree with Tinwheeler Re external noise though. We have Sonos speakers dotted around at home, they work exclusively on WiFi, there's no wired connection except a mains lead.

why not just get a good bluetooth stand alone speaker that will provide a really good sound....

i have a very small Lidl one which i bought to try out....less that £20 and is pretty good, SIL has just bought an upmarket version for £500 so plenty of price/performance range...

i also have some nice bluetooth headphones which give a great sound...

For the amount you will spend on a new audio source,  subwoofer/driver and crossovers, I would be tempted to buy a Sonos (other wireless speakers are available) or a good quality bluetooth speaker as suggested by BB.  It's zero effort in reconfiguring your
van and you can use it at home and on non-caravan holidays etc too.

Please don't park next to me! Headphones might be a better plan M of S! The resonance of the speakers have been mentioned and that will very quickly lead to a complaint. Folk go away for peace and quiet, not a disco!

I have Sonos at home in 3 rooms and love it. Depends what you wish to use it for in caravan though, surely. My Sonos runs from either internet streaming of radio stations (may not always be possible in a caravan) or by using a NAS drive of digital music
files. Using Sonos in caravan has advantage of being able to take indoors as well.

but that said, given amount of time I sit inside caravan, I personally wouldn't put one in van.

How do you get on with the sonos 3 as i am also toying with the idea, how loud is it and does it give some nice bass?

The reason i ask is beacuse our van is on a site where there is no one around or very few for the season most weekdays and sometimes we have a get together at weekends and sit around a fire after a bbq sort of sonario.  I would just love to have a better
sound system than what we have as we can only just hear it outside and can sound distorted.  I dont want a massive sub that would pump out 60hz louder than a kango going off and destroying the van, just a little ooomh to add a little depth and richness to
the sound.  To be honnest im not really sure that these underseat subs are any good as i havent heard one as yet,  But i really dont want nothing too big as i too like to hear the peace and quiet, so wont be disturbing anyone elses privacy.

As far as I am concerned if I can hear miy system beyond the edge of my pitch it is too loud. I detest 'background' music and particularly somebidy elses.

I think what Mosgb is trying to say, is that he is not aiming at increased volume from his existing system but a better quality of sound.

If it sounds difficult to hear and distorted when he is sat outside I consider too loud personally.

If he increases the bass the sound will carry even further.

Some people are while others can see no further than their own little world.

Let me clarify what I said earlier which seems to have been misunderstood. I was pointing out in response to Malc's point about increasing sound quality that by doing so via a subwoofer is inevitably going to increase the area the sound travels or resonates
over due the the behaviour of the bass frequencies. It's a point I also made near the start of the thread.

OP I can recommend the UE Boom 2 Bluetooth speaker for the sort of use you're looking for.

Controllable, good sound quality at low levels, affordable and fully portable.

We've looked at a few options for our van but domestic type sound systems don't really work well in a tin can
