Caravan water tasting strange

We always use a filter jug in the caravan, whatever site we are on.

Freshwater tap has a threaded end, that's it.
Waste water tap usually a short hose.
Exactly, the one without a hose says drinking water, the other doesn't. The water of course is the same source, its just the hose on the end that isn't sterile as folk tend to shove them into the wastemaster to rinse them out. I've seen lots of folk use the wrong tap, thankfully we no long fill up at these points and we use a seperate container for fresh drinking water.

Flushing your system with salt and bicarb, as suggested in an earlier post, especially in the tiny quantities quoted, will do absolutely nothing to cleanse or purify your water system. To say table salt has the same cleaning power as sodium hypochlorite as they are both 'salts of sodium' is utter garbage - it's a bit like saying adding a pinch of bleach to your pasta is a good idea if you run out of salt!!! Because it isn't constantly filled with chlorinated water and regularly 'run through', caravan/MH pipework can become infected with bacterial/fungal growth which can form a so called 'biofilm'. Biofilm can be removed with several compounds, Milton and 'purple' beer line cleaner drawn into the pipes and left for several hours then flushed out are very effective and will leave your pipework sterile thereafter. If your van is fitted with an 'in line' filter, be sure to remove it during cleaning and replace it afterwards (as it is likely to harbour some of the bacteria or mould, which isn't 'killed' by the activated carbon 'charcoal' within it).

markflip - As I've mentioned in an earlier post, unfortunately Milton and Puriclens don't remove biofilms. I linked to an earlier post about Black Slime in Water Pump Pipes where the photo shown was taken only a day or so after the water supply had been cleaned and flushed through with either Milton or Puriclens (we use both so I can't be sure which was used). It may possibly 'leave your pipework sterile thereafter' but it certainly won't remove the biofilm. The bugs may be 'dead' but I certainly don't want to drink the residue.

My update must have been lost on P.3...
So we fludhed with Puriclean for a few hours and then flushed through with lots of fresh water (serviced pitch thankfully). The horrible taste has now gone, but reading other posts I can perhaps see that a separate container (maybe filter jug) could be the
way to go. It's just something else to buy and carry...Still need to flush system regularly anyway.

No, unfortunately not, but our friend assured us that it is what is regarded as a biofilm, made up of algae, bacteria, and other water borne pathogens, some of them potentially 'neurotoxic'. I have every faith in him, and since his advice, we've not drunk water throught the aquaroll (and indeed don't even connect it these days). We have a water container for drinking, or draw water directly from the tap, and use the site facilities for everything else. We don't even conenct up the water supply these days!
I would rather rely on my friends, than the Caravan Industry, Aquaroll, or similar. At least he has authenticated qualifications, and is renknowned in his field. I don't know if 'Aquaroll' employ similarly qualified experts, but I doubt it.

In fairness to Aquaroll and any other temporary water container maker their product is not the issue; that lies with stagnant water parked up in hoses, and where translucent hoses are involved there will be algae development plus inevitable bacteria. This is before we even consider possible leaching of chemicals from the plastics used. The fact that caravans see periodic rather than continuous use is the main driver for issues.
Carrying a 5 litre plastic container adds less weight that a single 500 ml can of beer so can't be a serious reason not to. A filter jug really only removes taints.0 -
Always sterilise my barrels with Milton Steriliser tablets, the ones for baby bottles. Never drink site water though, always buy bottled especially for T!

Yes always sterilize the barrels. We had a taste in our water in the caravan a couple years ago look on the internet . And found a cheap remedy 1l orange juice (smooth) . Put in 40l of water run through system and leave for a couple of hours .Flush through system and strange taste well be gone .we do this every year and no taste in the water since we done it so it works

We have a 5 litre bottle of tap water in the van and run it through a filter jug, same as at home. Tastes fine.
