Cover or Paint Seal?

We made a mistake this year of changing to a fixed bed Venus.  It ws a great relief yesterday to arrange a trade in for a new 2 berth Coachman 450 for Spring delivery.  It looks a far better van and we love the layout.  As we store the van under trees we
have been wondering about a cover.  The salesman assured us they are difficult to use and suggested paint seal instead.  The latter will not keep it clean and then how do we wash it?  We cannot do it at our free storage place and neither can we partk at home.
Furthermore washing caravans gets difficult for those in their 70's with hip replacements and so on.  Any ideas?

The salesman will get a "bonus" on sales, you can get just a cap to cover the roof,

ps I know how you feelFrown

Move storage sites so its not under trees and where they have cleaing facilities with proper steps etc to reach the roof so no need for ladders.

Cover will keep the leaves etc off but unless you buy a decent one it may well cause damp issues or scratch paint.  If you want to use the van you will have to remove the cover each time and put back on when returning (PITA).

Paint Seal will protect the van but will need cleaning but this process will be easier.

Costs will be similar for either option circa £400.

    What do you do now???

I've never used a cover - I'm sure it would be a pain to get on and off - and we tend not to leave our van unused for very lon,  so it would be a pain to keep utting it on and off.  Neither do we have paintseal on the current van, but we don't have trees
where we leave the van so it's not too bad.  Our worst problem is bird droppings! Laughing

I would agree with MichaelT, look for another site without trees. Having stopped on a few heavily treed sites for a few weeks, the van gets in a right state. We have paint seal which makes cleaning it off easier, but it still takes a while.

The paintseal is simply a money spinner for the salesman, about £10 worth of materials. It doesnt act as a dirt repellant although they do make cleaning 'easier'. However I empathise with your situation and can only advise you try and find alternative storage OR a hand car wash that will wash the 'van, roof included, without using high pressure hoses!. We had a cover for our first van and used it only once, very difficult to put on/take off.

Write your comments here...The materials cost a lot more than £10, plus you have to factor in a half day (maybe more) for someone to apply it plus the aftercare (they reseal it if there are issues), so a money spinner probably not but sure it generates some
commision for the salesman but not so much as selling a £400 cover would though!

Twice a year I take my m/h and my son takes his 'van to the local hand car wash who do an excellent job.

'Old' hips are too precious to wear them out by 'van washing.

Write your comments here...I am not sure it is just a money spinner though it obviously generates commission.  I had it on a new car 13 years ago and it seemed to work well.

Not totally correct, have it on van and car, and as long as you keep them away from trees which deposit sticky stuff, it does in effect repel dirt. OK you need a heavy rain storm, but we normally get a few of those. The majority of the muck and dirt is simply
washed off. We need to clean the van / car about half as much as we did with those that were not coated.

Yes, steps. They are from Eastern Europe, real grafters and do a very thorough job at £45 a go. Worth every penny. I've passed by and seen them washing a large horse box, a JCB, a tractor, motorcycles, various farming equipment, and on one ocasion two horses
    from nearby Hickstead Showground.

We have Paintseal and always tip the caravn as far nose down as possabile when its in storage. This action appears to self wash the roof to a good extent meaning a brush twice a season simply removes any film of dirt.

The Paintseal really does help in stopping the dirt getting grimmed in, how long for we will see !!!

My 2012 Coachman is paint sealed and the roof is easy to clean and seems not to attract the green algae my previous other van roofs did.

...It would only need a roof cover in the OPs case at less than £100

Write your comments here...Yes the roof gets dirty but so does the rear panel.  If we opt for a cover, even just a roof one, it will need a step ladder and fiddling about to get it in place.  None of that is very easy for those in their mid 70's.  I think
we may just accpet the cost of going to a near by dealer, six miles, and paying for his wash service.  The problem with local car wash serices is that they use pressure washers and the one nearest to us does not want to do it anyway.  He gave me a figure designed
    to send me away.

..And the dealer does not use pressure washers,  the rear panel is easely done with a long handle brush,  and why the need for steps to put the "cap" on, use a couple of washing line "props" to feed it onto the roofWink
