Cold Shower!!

Well put BB.
I always dry the shower after use 'cos I don't want all that moisture in the van and we only have a roof vent, no window to open. I always dry the shower at home too
where I use a Karcher Window Vac then a quick wipe. I might start taking the Karcher in the van. If I leave the shower to dry it leaves water marks and then requires a more thorough clean with cleaning agents.I also utilise that at home, a great invention. Unfortunately would not work very well in our van shower, too many curves.

We used our shower once just to try it out and its fine but to use it again we would have to empty all the gear we store in there and start lugging large quanties of water around the site for what?
At the risk of being ridiculed for repeating what I've said on another thread (
), we're exactly the same - except that we've never once used the shower on our van! If
you've a huge van/MH and just two people, I guess it's very convenient, but in a small van with 2 people and 2 dogs space is at a premium. The shower room becomes a storage area. So it's site showers for us, more space, more reliable water supply and no steaming
up/damp issues to contend with!0 -

...nor on the OH, she's thinking of going back to a towel

it just happens that, not having a shower in the van, would limit our touring style of using CL/THS in the UK and a fair amout of aires when abroad.
so, using the shower regularly makes it 'the default' choice in the morning, especially in the (colder, wetter) UK.
however, like AD and Valda, we will happily amble in the sun to the site showers when ensconsed on a site 'somewhere warm

Agreed, although we've found plenty of CLs and CSs with a single shower this year which suits us fine - admittedly it means we miss out on long stays in some great locations; we have done the odd 3/4 nighter on no facility sites - just have a flannel wash
in the van to keep things relatively whiff free!0 -
relatively.....
(not ridiculing, lol)

If specified when ordering a new van, many manufacturers charge nothing.
We did ours afterwards, on delivery, and the cost in 2008 was £50.
Ours was increased from 1815kg to 1900kg, more than covering the weight of the air con, Fiamma, the 2 wheel mover, and a few other odds and ends we added, still leaving the original payload intact.

with an average payload of around 150kg. I wonder what some of you carry that requires the washroom to be used as an extra cupboard ?
Bulky but light objects travel in the shower,
the washing machine (about 6kg)
camping chairs and some spare bedding. We travel for up to 3 months and we need a fair amount of things one wouldnt normally take for a shorter holiday, heavier stuff travels in the car. We have increased the MTPL.Our washing machine fits very nicely in the front locker. It's a bucket!
Multi functional and light weight

It does spin dry I assume
Doesn't need to it's always hot and sunny on the continent I'm on holiday so what does it mater if my boxers take 4 hours to dry not 3

OMG.....thank you so much everyone, I didnt expect such a respnse!!!!! I'll get the OH to read every one of your comments, and get him on the case. Its all a bit technical for me!
We specifically bought this caravan because it had such a large washroom, it would be a shame not to use it , if we can. I'm not a big fan of trudging to the shower block at 7 in the morning, so fingers crossed we can figure it out.
Thank you all so much xxxx

Sorry you had to suffer all the knock about stuff. Not sure what sort of h/w system you have but the following I think are work considering.
1 You are being optimistic in what it can do. I shower every day in our van. If you think that anything under 30 minutes is a quick shower then may be you need to think again
2 You are being impatient heating switch on 5. Minutes later you expect a piping hot shower
3 You have an airlock in the tank so you aren't heating a full tank of water. A problem we had in the last van was on electric after a period of time the water was tepid on gas we didn't experience the same problem. The cause there was a oneway valve on
the water inlet was leaking so hot water was passing back into the aquaroll and the element was switching off. on gas it was simply a burner at the bottom of the tank so just heated the water. The replacement part cost me about £5 so was a cheap fix. But
try yours on gas to see if it makes a difference and when you initially fill the tank all the air is bleed from the hot taps to ensure the tank is fullThe suggestions above are in no particular order just as I thought of them It might also be worth asking someone on site with a similar van how they find the h/w system and compare notes Obviously you to find some who uses it and doesn't just shower
and does his washing up using the site facilities. Which of course is basically and predictably this thread degenerated the pro and anti shower brigades ihaving their say which is amusing but not helpful for you And I am as guilty of that as anyone else sometimes
you, just have to sort the wheat from the chaff0 -
If you have plenty of HW for dishwashing etc, then the most likely problem is that your expectation on the length of time the HW will last is over optimistic.
We have the Alde boiler which gives us 8 or so litres of hot, when boosted to the higher temperature we get about maybe 5 minutes of hot enough water.
This is plenty if you use the "wet down, water off, soap up, rinse off" regime. If you leave the water running all the time, it will most likely run cold before you finish rinsing off, especially if you have a decent amount of hair to get the shampoo out of....unlike me!!
Next is to ensure you leave enough time for water to heat or reheat, at least 20 minutes.
And use both gas and electricity together.

Thanks for that, this is all really useful info. We are new to caravanning, so every day of our first week was a challenge really!
I was probably only getting about 2 minutes of hot water before it turned cold, so I dont think my expectations are too high, lots of good advice, so we will try again.

We dont really have lots of hot water, I can fill a small basin to wash dishes, thats about it. I was only in the shower for about 2 minutes before it started to run cold, so i dont think I'm being too optomistic.
I do have long hair, but I get the whole "water on, water off" thing. To be honest, its when I switch it off, then switch it on again that it starts to run cold.
Lots of good tips though, we will definately take a look at what we are doing.
Thanks!!

No, more than 2 minutes is not an unreasonable expectation. I did mean to say if you get a lot of spluttering from your hot tap then that can be an indication of trapped air. But my best suggestion was ask an owner. Chances are they will know more than the dealer.
Just reading your other post our last van had a comedy shower tap because you switch off by going from hot to cold and when you switched it back on you got a slug of cold water before it ran warm again.

We have a Truma combi boiler 10l when we are using the hot water/heating and intend to use the shower we leave the settings to 60 deg and 1kw overnight so that the water is hot enough in the morning, once I'm ready to have my shower we turn it up to 2kw
so it heats up again for OH to have his. I tend to use about 8 - 10 litres of water for my shower and OH 6 - 8 litres for his, he doesn't use conditioner0 -

We have an Alde and run on electric - normally 2KW. When we strike camp I turn the water and heating off and run the hot water into the sink. I fill the kitchen sink near to the top and use a long knife to flick plug out. I repeat a second time and, providing I am quick, can dip my hand down and pull the plug without suffering. After that if I have more water in the aquaroll the next sink full is hot but not too hot - about dish washing temp. If we are having showers I boost the temp on the hot water and no problem.

with the 10 ltr hot at 60 deg (or a shade hotter, i believe, with the new boost function) it will require (say) 5 ltr of cold to bring it down to a good 'hot' shower...
so, thats 15 ltr to play with...
i tend to go in first, (leaving the water heater on) and probably manage on 5 or 6 ltrs, OH can then dive straight in for a 'longer' 9-10 ltr shower, with the water staying hot for the duration......
the 'only' other option is for the first 'victim' to have a full, longer shower, and then the second to wait until the tank has reheated.....say a good 20 mins....
we prefer the first scenario.....
either way, your hot supply should be lasting far longer than it 'seems' to be at present....

There is a 3rd option BB, shower together

My only complaint about mine is the amount I have to run off before it flows hot. It's not as if the heater is at the other end of the van.
