How do Lunar make their caravans so light

My 1998 Lunar Ariva GT is remarkably well put together, considering it is so light. There does seem a tendancy for caravans to get heavier- even the Ariva keeps on gaining weight- I notice that the 2017 model is 30kg heavier than the 2016 model, without
any significant changes... and as cars get lighter (my car can only tow 1,000kg) then surely manufacturers will have to start considering making their vans lighter- with modern materials, it shouldn't be an issue. And making some standard fitments (such as
microwave ovens) an option for those who want to keep the weight down...

To get them signifricantly lighter they would need to omit things or follow our old Trophy and go for an aluminium chassis.

We have recently brought an 8 year old Luna Quasar 524 as our first tourer. We chose it partly on the basis of weight since we couldn't find many vans that were within the 85% weight of our 2 litre VW Passat which, as a novice tower seemed prudent to maintain.
It appears to my untrained eye to be in good condition so time will tell how well it puts up with being bounced around on our increasingly derelict road system. We are off for our last week-long trip of the year tomorrow before consigning it to winter storage.
If it collapses in a cloud of dust before then I shall let you know.

Apparently 3 others but I don't know year, model etc. But then I'm not on lots of forums.

Write your comments here...Oneputt, over the last 6 weeks of touring we've come across 2 other instances of Lunar floor delamination problems in addition to yours. No other make and model has had this problem mentioned to us.

Having said that, both of the aforementioned Lunar  were also dealer specials. Coincidence?

We're fairly happy with our Lunar and have only had small niggles. We did have a Swift that had 36 visits to the dealer within its 36 month warranty period. Strangely we part-exed it in month 37!

Hey WN the further info I have it seems most of the vans are Quaser based.  Certainly won't be buying a dealer special again!

I am afraid other makes have had the same problems and probably only Swift with their floors with only the centre section wooden are safe from this.

I can only speak as I have found. My parents first bought a new light weight Lunar Clubman brand new in 1987. I took it over in 1997 and sold it to buy our first new caravan (a Coachman Amara in 1999). the caravan was fault free and travelled extensively
all over Europe and had at least 50 nights plus a year.  It must have covered 80,000 towing miles in 12 years! They then had two more Clubmans the last of which was 11 years old and bone dry and faultless when sold. We had our first Lunar Clubman new in 2011.
Also fault free and a pleasure to tow. only issues were thin aluminium panels prone to dents from stones etc, however to be fair we had the same issue on our previous 2006 Coachman Pastiche. Our current 2015 Lunar Clubman is streets ahead on quality of furniture,
external panels etc and you wouldn't know how they got the weight down. I think the new construction has really helped. Having had three well made Cochman caravans, I think the current generation of Lunar are well ahead in terms of finish and build. We are
also able to tow it without having needing a massive Chelsea Tractor.

My Lunar Clubman SB, purchased new in 2012,  hsd been an excellent van , the only problem we've encountered was an adjustment needed to one of the cupboard doors above the sink . Having had a damp Coachman & a not too well constructed Pageant previously
I can't complain . Regularly checked with a damp meter it is still bone dry . The single beds are comfortable with a 'proper' matress . Perhaps we've been lucky , but then my daughter & SiL have had no problem with their 2012 Delta either . Having seen ours
, they bought theirs a couple of weeks later ..

Just a quick update on the above.

Our trip was uneventful and the van is still in one piece and currently back in storage. Because of all the talk of damp vans I've ordered a damp-meter so that I can keep a check on ours.

during its first service damp was found throughout the nearside as in under lockers around wheal and entrance door. Dealer special quasar. Six months later still waiting for the parts and now been told could be after Xmas as its a big job and has to go to
body shop. If I could be bothered with the stress I would not be very happy but there it is..
