Water hasn't drained from tank

To fully drain the water from the water tank, I have always used the sink taps to drain water from the outside water barrel and close the taps when no more water comes out. I then flick a switch underneath one
of the seats and water drains out of the water tank.

Two weeks ago, the water heater (powered by gas) turned itself on and made an unusual noise. There was also a very strong smell of 'hot plastic'. We turned the boiler off for the remainder of the day. The next
day we tried the boiler again and it was fine. At the end of our holiday, I went through the normal process to drain the water (as above) but when I flicked the switch to drain out the water tank, nothing came out. The water finally drained out when the caravan
was towed.

We took the caravan out this weekend (just gone). We had no problems filling the tank, or with the boiler, but again the water didn't drain out of the tank when I flicked the switch. The water also didn't drain
out when the caravan was towed.

Now I am unsure a) if there is any water sitting in the tank or b) how to drain it from the tank and c) if the incident with the boiler has caused damage to the water pipes.

Some advice would be much appreciated.

My caravan is being services in about 3 weeks.

Thank you

When you drain hot water tank open sink tap set on hot water, i actually set it midway. Drains far better if air gets in via the taps as water drains out. Otherwise the partial vacuum formed inhibits draining

on our van (MH) when the hot water tank drain tap is pulled, the water pump comes on to pump the water out....agreed it helps if taps are a bit open...but i dont know how the pump would work in a caravan as ours is 'in board and in line'...whereas i guess
a caravan one sits in a barrel, so can it pump water from a hot tank?

When hot tank drains on my last two vans it is purely gravity. If you invert a narrow necked bottle and part drain, then stop the flow with a finger it is possible to have the vacuum form that prevents the remaining water from draining when you remove your
finger unless you shake the bottle

This time of year I would bother to empty the hot water tank between uses. Only got fill up again next time Im out. Winter is different matter and needs draining down between use.

To drain the tank you need to have taps open as Easy T says otherwise it won't drain. Equally in the winter keep the taps open as well then if freezing occurs there is room for expansion.

I agree we do not drain the tank until winter is coming. We do drain it then before leaving the site and leave the taps and valve open assuming the ups and downs of the journey will clear any last drops.

we had a similar problem many years ago, the dealer knew how to fix it very easily. There is a part that when you pull the vertical switch to drain the tank allows air into the tank to aid draining, this had failed, some non return valve? Opening the taps doesn't help a lot as opening the' tap' isn't the same as a house tap, the caravan tap when opened runs the pump and pumps water through it, isn't the tap open all the time? or have I have got that wrong?

Oh and the hot plastic smell has been reported anddiscussed many times on here, its perfectly normal according to Truma, and nothing to worry about, it usually happens when the heater is cooling down?

You have got it wrong Sealed

The taps in my experience have a ceramic cartridge in them just like a domestic tap. Which is why in winter the advice is leave them open at the half way point so that the pipe work a can breath and any water in them can flow back.  Obviously leave them
open with the pump switch off.

Write your comments here...I've seen gallons of liquid pouring out of Motorhomes after they leave site,---- Now I know why.  Thanks.

Here was I thinking that the driver was too lazy to go to the grey waste disposal point before leaving site.
