Tyre pressures
Does anybody drive their caravan to the local garage(petrol pumps) to top up their caravan tyres? Also can somebody recommend a pump to handle 65psi please.

I use a Michelin foot pump to check and pump up the tyres while they are cool. Have found no problems this way. Also saves the hassle of towing the van to a garage

Tyre pressures should be checked when cold so it is not agood idea to drive anywhere first. Ring 635 tyre compressor is easily capable of 65psi.

Thanks for the reply Vulcan. Do you use this Ring 635 yourself on your caravan tyres? I had a look on Google after reading your reply and there is a few to select from. Which model do you recommend?

I use the little pump i had with an emergency inflation kit. Just don't screw in the bottle of gunk. Lead needed extending a bit so i can lplug into car and reach caravan. Had Bailey so eaisily inflated to 65psi and fairly quick. I have to say i was a bit
suprised it managed it.I think you can get them on ebay for around £20.00.David.

Thank you David. Can you narrow it down by possibly naming the kit that you are talking about?

Some of the reviews on Amazon say the Ring 635 can very in accuracy; some over read, some under read. Plus many say you lose a few PSI when you remove nozzle. If you get one I suggest you check it against a garage forecourt gauge.

The Ring 365 is a good bit of kit - mine lives in the car all the time. The only issue is the power lead. Although it is a reasonable length for a car, you might find it a bit tight trying to reach the 12v point in your van when you want to check pressures before departure, if you can't reach the one in the car. Also the lead has to be stowed away in the body of the pump, if you want to keep it in the provided case, and this is fiddly to do. Finally, note that the plug utilises a 10 amp fuse, so you need to check the rating on the van socket, which may well be 5 amp, Similarly if you buy a 12v extension cable, these also come with 5amp fuse, but a good quality cable can quite safely handle a 10 amp
And finally, you can use it on your Lock n Level if you have one

Try using a cycle track pump - much easier and quicker than you would expect and silent as well.

I use an old Halfords foot pump about forty years old. Mind you, the max pressure I require is 50psi. It'll do 65 but I'd end up with leg muscles like Chris Froome.

Yes, I have been using the Ring 635 for a while now, always over inflate about 4lbs then release pressure to correct setting checking with hand held digital gauge.

Had no success with the 12volt inflators myself. They get hot and just won't do the job.
My van needs 55lbs and my solution was to buy one from Aldi when they were on offer. Mains powered and excellent German engineering. Real garage type gauge and garage type fitting for other uses.

Just got a michelin footpump which handles 65PSI easy enough - one thing I did love on it the attachment to the valve is a screw on type rather than the push on and pull lever type - much easier to apply and virtually no loss of pressure when you take it
off- £20 out of Halfords0 -
Lidl have mains powered air compressors on sale this week. Great addition to your garage if you are car maintenance minded.

I've bought one of these to go with my Ring 635 :-
Works well.

I've got a 12volt tyre inflater from Halfords. I've not tried it on my caravan yet, but as it has pumped up bike tyres to 80 psi, I have no reason to think that it will struggle to get a caravan up to 55psi. Might take a while as the volume of air is much
higher. Also, I might need to give the inflator a break if it does get too hot. Pumping a large volumne of air up to 55psi will generate a lot of heat.0
