Tyre Load ratings

Hi we have just brought a 2007 Sprit Alpine 4 and I know that the tyres need to be replaced before using the caravan as one has bad cracking due to sun damage and lack of use. The tyres on the van are of the correct size and loading at 195/70 14 96N this is the same as on the plate on the van.

I am being told that the 96 load rating is not current and I should use 95 rated tyres. The issue is these are 20KG less on load. This is still over the max load of the van but I have heard that this could cause issues with insurance cover etc.

I have found some 96n on line but a a much higher price than the 95 rated tyres.

Looking for some advice please.

Thanks

Get some 101 rated ones and give yourself a margin.

I had throught about that as I have a quote from Tyres on your drive that listed the 101 rated tyres.

And agree that having spare weight in the tyres has to be better than being very close to othe actual max limit of the van.

    ThanksSmile

With my 2006 Alpine 4 (mtplm 1,230kg) the '95' tyre was an alternative, which I put on when I changed the orginal Matador tyres due to wall cracking. The 95 tyre has a load rating of 690kg X 2 = 1,380kg so there is plenty of margin, tyre pressure was 39psi
    for my mtplm.

I changed the tyres on our caravan a few weeks ago. I got some Hankook Vantra tyres, which have a good reputation.

I also changed to 185 width because they have a higher load rating. You do need to check the profile also if you do this, to ensure that the overall diameter remains the same, to avoid any problems with a mover (if fittted).

I changed from 175\80 R14 to 185\75 R14 which increased the load rating from 775kg to 850kg per side (1550 to 1700kg overall). The overall diameter is virtually identical.
