We bought an awning today (weight - 20kg). For transportation purposes, where is the best place to carry it? In the car or in the caravan? - presumably over the axle.

Yes, if your payload allows it.

I carry mine in the car anyway so we're not falling over it in the caravan when we stop for a break/brew Laughing

We tend to carry ours in the car.  Mainly because we keep it at home when not in use as we sometimes need to take it home to dry the panels out.  It is also a payload thing.
