Theft deterrent!!

Whilst away on site last week we got chatting to a couple who like us have gone through the distress of having their caravan stolen. The insurance assessor recommended removal of seat cushions whilst the van is not in use because the thieves don't want the
expense of replacements! A blind should be left partially open so they can see this! Obviously other security devices should also be used! Hope this may be useful to other members.

I have a friend who kept her caravan in storage and her caravan had been broken into - all they stole were the seat cushions! It took her months to get replacements!

Thieves steal caravans either for their own use or to sell on. If yours has no upholstery it is not going to be any use for either so is an effective deterrent.

It has been suggested they will then steal the furnishings from another identical caravan but they have to find it first and might as well steal that.

It is possible however that the stolen upholstery was from someone with the same caravan and needed to replace theirs. I have certainly dealt with a claim from a dealer for stolen Hobby cushions which was attributed but not proven to be travellers.

    Hi,

I always remove most of my cushions whilst in store age but leave a couple in as they act as a wick and take up what would otherwise be condensation. Or that is what I think. As previously mentioned it is also most important to take all other (as many as
    poss) security measures.

    Happy and safe storage.

Be careful though in what you remove from your van as my house insurance does not cover me for any camping equipment as standard (quite a lot of policies have this in them now it seems)

we were glad that we had taken everything back to the caravan the weekend before we had a break in at home so my awning and cushions didn't suffer the same fate as my furniture when they ransacked the house breaking furniture
and ripping things open...guess some people hide valuables in their soft furnishings and within furniture (we don't!!!).  It was only cos we  had the caravan to decamp to that we didn't end up in some awful hotel while things were cleaned (i'll leave that
to your imagination) and replaced and repaired...

It's only when you have to claim for anything that the devil that is in the detail of all that small print could come back to bite you    should the worst happen at home as checking our caravan insurance it only covers things
when they are actually in the caravan...
