we are on the cusp of going for a new van with a fixed bed layout however we have spoken to a few caravanners who have reverted to layouts requiring the daily bed assembly ritual. Who else has gone for fixed bed only to revert and why? I don't want to make
an expensive mistake!

Went from a fixed bed to Compass Rallea, more daytime room and dinette, table for eating and reading etc, also gives us another window view, just love it and it still makes a bed if needed

Very nearly did, for the extra day-time space. Then realised how little time was spent in the van during daylight and our preference to sleep on a something designed for that purpose. The daily bed-make was not seen as a big issue but night-time comfort
    was.

All beds I've seen that were designed to sleep on didn't have a corner cut off or weren't a short D shape that needed to be pulled out to make it long enough to sleep on Cool

My wife nd Ihoseto have  twin long singles at the rear of our PVC.If we have the inclination they will make into a double bed.We prefer the twin singles as nocturnal loo visits do not involve waking each other,we can stretch out in the evenings and if one
wants to drift off to sleep it does not bother the other and taking the dog out first thing does not mean waking the OH up.It is also more suitable for when I go off for a walking break with a male pal-we are close friends but not close enough to share a double
    bed!

After 9.5 years of a fixed bed Sprite Alpine 4, we have now gone back to a 2 berth, Compass Omega 482 around the same size as the Sprite. More space throughout the day, large rear washroom area with large wardrobe and walk in shower, well worth the few minutes
to make up the bed! so says the wife!! she wanted it.

We went from makeing too fixed and back again in less than a year and that was an expencive mistake Sad The fixed bed took up far too much floor space for our likeing. It had good storage space but it was all rear of the axle which is not ideal.

Having started out caravanning with making up beds, then moving to side fixed bed, then 2 single fixed beds, we have come full circle back to 2 single made up beds that also make into a huge king bed if we so wish. When its nice outside we sit outside so
beds stay made up, when away in bad weather it doesn't take minutes to make up and gives us a much bigger lounge for sprawling in during the day should we so wish.

We've gone back to making up a bed or beds in our M/H. I sometimes miss the fixed island bed we used to have in our last caravan but have managed fine without one. If you have any difficulty with movement I expect a fixed bed would be a good idea.

Yes, I think you'll be truly luxuriating in your new van Pete. On seconds thoughts, if you can have a fixed bed go for it and enjoy it!Happy

Takes me no time and no effort to make up the bed, as per a previous post if the weather is good we just leave it made up. I can`t really see the point of towing a bed all over Europe.

Would never contemplate going back to making beds. Our 4 berth fixed bed makes a nice 2 berth. In the summer we more or less live outside anyway but even out of the summer the living space is ample for us and the dog.

Don't think we  would go back to making up beds now, our van only has small living area but its enough room for the two of us and the dog.

We have talked about going to a fixed bed and this is still on the agenda for our next change in a couple of years. I still have my doubts though as I like the flexibility of our current side dinette 4 berth. Good living space & washroom and beds made in
    a couple of minutes.

All caravanning involves compromise and sleeping arrangements over living space is probably one of the major ones.

We will have to decide soon enough when we make the next change

Went from parallel benches to fixed bed, and back to benches. Then bought a fixed bed euro caravan; fantastic. Not too heavy or long, and practical U-seating and fixed bed. Difficult to get an equivilant UK van. Also looked at Adria, good layouts for couples.

Hi changed our van last year from a Bailey ranger 4berth fixed bed to a Lunar Cosmos 564 we love it, not only does it enable us to have a washrom which you can enjoy using and doesn't doesn't feel as if we are living in a bed sit. It is also great when the
grand children come away with us as they can have their own space as well as us. We use sleeping bags and a good quality mattress topper which takes all of ten mins to prepare beds for a great nights sleep In my opinion a fixed bed is a waste of valuable space

Does anyone simply choose to sleep in the awning (in an inner tent) rather than getting the bedding out each night and making up beds .... particularly in a small caravan?  After a lifetime tent-camping I enjoy a bed 'in the open air' as a change from the
bedroom at home.  Having all the facillities of the (unclutered) van alongside is sheer luxury.

Not very good if yo use the van in winter.

We changed our fixed bed van for an MH with make up beds. Extra washroom space, extra day space, no problem making up beds.

2 Berth to fixed double bed x2 back to making up with a side dinette, then to fixed singles single axle now the perfect fixed singles in a twin axle van, loads of space, large bathroom and 2 full size single beds 6'3 x 2'7.

These changes were over 14 years!!

Why not?  .... with decent insulation underneath and a decent bag or duvet you should never be cold in this country.  As soon as you are up in the morning you are into the van. (unlike tent-camping).

Anyway, Christmas was positively balmy this year!

Absolutely not - we moved to a fixed bed in 2000, after years of caravanning with children.  When they decided they wished to sleep outside in a pup tent, we got a fixed bed - and we've still got that caravan fifteen and more years later.  There's no way we would evey go back to 'cushion rearranging!.

We still prefer to sleep together in one bed,and have no problems when one has to climb other during the night (indeed it makes for added 'interest') and I can't see us changing any time soon!

At the end of it, though, it very much depends on how you use your caravan!  Like Deleted User User, MBee and others,  ours is basically a bedroom on wheels so the shorter front sofas are no problem - we rarely use them, our socialising is done outside the van, and our bed is wonderfully comfortable!  We sleep better in the van than we do at home.

And sometimes, yes,  when it's very very hot, we do sleep outside, under a mosquito net draped from the awning poles - wonderful, although the deflating inflatable mattress, is a bit of a pain!

We have gone back to a 4 berth with centre dinette, using the front beds as singles after years of making a double bed up. Tried a semi permanent fixed bed which was good in that we could get straight into it but it is a waste of space, although they are
classed as 4 berth we think they aren't really suitable, our front seats were short so not a lot of space for a family of 4 for relaxing. Depends on your needs and what you want from your 'van.

We have a fixed bed and would not change. our previous van did not have one so we used to keep the bed permanently made up.

Would never go back to bed making. Have a fixed bed, next van will be island bed.
