There was a parliamentary committee on tv this morning discussing the registering and testing of Caravans and Trailers.

How would you feel about having to register your caravan and have it tested annually ( just like a MOT )   and the prosecution of drivers who are pulling trailers which does not come up to required standard ???

Didn't see it, which committee? I thought this one was buried (in part by representations to our MEPs and by the Club) when it came from EU so who has raised it again and why (plus what needs to be done to stop it?)

I believe this debate was Initiated by a Westminster MP relating to the UK and was not related to any EU legislation. It was pre-recorded a few days ago.

Karen Smith  MP and the debate was entitled " Safety of towed trailers on public roads"

If it will make caravans and trailers safer then I dont mind BUT it must apply to all - tiny tip trailers throught to monster agricultural ones - not just caravans.

But which ones are going to be picked up, the caravan trundling along a trunk road/motorway or some ramshackle agri-trailer scuttling down some remote lane or equally a bodge-up home made tip trailer on a two mile dash to the local amenity site?

The particular sad incidents quoted both appear to be trailers coming detached from cars.

A blanket MOT would not prevent this type of incident (unless there were some fault with any breakaway devices which would have been required on the 2 tonne trailer in the most recent case) The description of the trailers careering off does not tell us if there was any braking system or if it behaved as it should.

Whilst I'd gladly agree to some type of test if it could be proved to be beneficial, I think a very expensive and administratively complex blanket application of trailer registration and a testing system would not give much real benefit for the cost.

Education would seem to be a good first step along with a more detailed investigation and publicising of the data.

As CY says, if it's agricultural or industrial trailers, or caravans then the focus should be on the specific source of the most worrying incidents.

Of course the issues of mobile phone use, drink, drugs, speeding etc etc are probably producing many more deaths although that does not mitigate the personal disasters that follow every road related death.
