Damp stop

just wonderd what everbody uses during winter months in their caravans, we have used damp traps this time but i have haerd that some people use a bowl of salt to catch the damp which is best ?????

    You will get a variety of answers, none of which are best but we use salts above a tray which collects the moisture and empty every 6 weeks or so plus leave heating on just above frost level. Also fit fridge vents as van fridge faces into wind. Seems to
    have worked for last 25 years. Some people just air the van regularly. I'm sure others will give you more tips and then you can choose what suits you.

    We put the van away as dry as we can, plus remove all bedding, except the mattresses but do nothing else. In our old van we used to pull seat cushions and mattresses away from the sides, but the current van has alde heating so this is not necessary as there
    is a built in gap. Personally I don't think a dehumidifier does anything, because the moist air which you have dried out is continually replaced from outside.

    Keep on using the van, thats the best way to stop the van getting damp over winter, ours never lies idle longer than 3 weeks. Far to much invested in van and car to have the van languishing in storage half the year! Happy

    Same for us. Keep using the van and never had a problem.

    As the two above. Use the van. Additionally, when not in use, ventilation and keep it warm. Its such a mild and very, very wet winter, it wont matter how dry you think it might be, unattended, it soon wont be. I've often thought that removing absorbant materials
    as a bit on the extreem side, but, again this year, its worth doing.



    An interesting fact: Wool can absorb 30% or more of its own weight in water, before it feels wet to the touch.

    Hi, Never use salt in your van, as it will turn the screws rusty inside your van, use the bag of Kontrol Krystals from your hardware shop or Homebase ect, you will be ok, Elsa

    Hi I have damp in my caravan it has been in for repair when I first got it I took to a different dealer and they said that the dealer I got it from has just disgised it by putting ply wood over the top and its bubbled and spungy any advise would be welcome

    Sorry to hear about your problem Chris.  Damp in caravans can be a real pain.   I am sure someone will come along and give you some advice soon.  Fortunately our caravan (now sixteen years old) is completely damp free.

    Dealers who don't properly deal with a problem should be named and shamed.
