Crowded roads
I have just been reading how crowded UK roads are (as if we did not know)a survey of EU roads with the most congested"pinch points" where speeds are less than 35% of road speed,
1 UK 20,000
2 Germany,8517
3 Italy 5000
Top three UK
1 M25 junc 15 M4 to junc 16 M40
2 Edinburgh By pass
3 Glasgow A8/M8 junc

Having just recently driven along the M56/M6/M62/M60 I can verify that it is indeed one heck of a crowded environment out there. I used to think that the roads in the South East,and particularly around London and the south coast ,were awful for volume but
driving along the A55 in North Wales and along the motorway systems in the North West is getting just as bad. I am somewhat surprised by the gap between 1st. and 2nd on the list and also by the absence of the Netherlands which often seems just as crowded to
me as the UK.0 -
Perhaps worth mentioning that some of the countries mentioned have much larger land masses than the UK which might have an impact as the traffic is more spread out? Mind you I have been in some serious holdups on German motorways.

Me too, around Hamburg and what about the Periphique, avoid it at all costs. Generally though roads on the Continent are much better than the UK and certainly less congested unless it is a holiday get away.

If the population is increasing at the levels we have heard today, is it any surprise that the fabric of society generally, not just the roads, is at breaking point?

There is no such thing as a good day on the M25 but you are much less likely to encounter heavy traffic on the Continent. I have had no problems driving round Munich. Most days are good days.

Try it some time.!
A!so an ex 'Herts' guy may I ask how things are in Bishops Stortford, Welwyn, Harlow, Ware, Cheshunt, Broxbourne, Stevanage and Watford?

There is no such thing as a good day on the M25 but you are much less likely to encounter heavy traffic on the Continent. I have had no problems driving round Munich. Most days are good days.

I used it Last Sunday to get to the M3 from the A41. For the M25 it wasn't that bad but it wasn't what I call relaxed driving either.

I used it Last Sunday to get to the M3 from the A41. For the M25 it wasn't that bad but it wasn't what I call relaxed driving either.

The best time to drive along the M25 is around 2:00am, although, a couple of years ago, we got on the M25 (coming back from Dover) in the early afternoon, we drove on it until the M40, and no hold ups at all. A first

...Use those roads quite often M25 t0 friends off Junc 8 +M3 via "smart roadworks\\\\, ,and Hertfordshire is quite busy with the M11 ,A10,A1M and M1 trunk roads running through

Well, JVB66, you have my commiserations and sympathy - M25/M23 (just short of Heathrow in a clockwise direction) has to be the pits. I still prefer the the other roads in Herts. At least the traffic flows up there rather than stop/starts.

The M25 is no worse than other motorways in the UK. I've used it for many years to get to Dover when crossing to the continent. Its not as bad as the M6/ M5 junction in Brum.
The answer to any conjestion in London itself is straightforward. :- . Make the busiest areas of London car free and only allow Emergency vehicles, commercial vehicles and public transport including taxis. . .

..Not in the "rush?"hours the A1m (two miles from us), is a nightmare,glad we do not have to travel those times

I've not found the M25 too bad but have experienced problems on the M42/M6. I travel these roads infrequently so my assessment of conditions cannot be regarded as definitive any more than my experience of off-peak rail travel. It's probably only those who
do these journeys on a daily basis that endure the full horror of them.0 -
The last time I did a late night early morning stint on a motorway the journey took an hour and a half longer than the sat nav showed. This was due to all the overnight roadworks that where going on. Due to all the traffic on the roads nowadays this seems
to be the prefered time of day to carry out repairs.0 -
So is it a better hold-up to have near stationary traffic with little to cause harm or 35mph dodgems with many forever (trying to) swap lanes for a micro-advantage?

They didn't include M60 where the M56 joins it, heading towards Stockport - should try going through there at about now (15:30 onwards)
