Does anyone have a crystal ball?  My heating supplier - LPG has just hiked the price - to 52p per litre variable - OR 49p fixed for 12 months - plus VAT of course - 49 p looks like a no brainer but - I am not sure??Undecided  I am trying another supplier to see what gives though.

Thanks DD - I did know it was linked to oil - which is kind of why I asked the question about the crystal ball.  My internet search produced someone selling at 31p per litre - VAT but it remains to be seen if they will deliver here in the sticks.  Prices at the petrol pumps seem to be varying a lot at the moment.  I feel more comfortable with a fixed price I think - but it would be annoying if the price was to go down a lot!  However the current economical climate would suggest that to be unlikely?

Pippah, we are also on LPG fuel and my contract is due up in January. I've had a little look around to see how prices are although I know they will change before my contract is up. We are with Flogas (MacGas in Scotland) and have been for years, I always
look around and then call my supplier and barter with them. Calor usualy offer a good deal to a new customer so I play my supplier off against them. We don't have as many choices as you may have down your way. The best prices are usualy offered to the highest
consumer, we have reduced our litres used over the last 5 years with us going away more and for longer so not sure if theis next time I'll be able to get such a good deal. Will follow this thread with interest to see just how good a price you can get.  Last
time I got it down to less than calor and a free tank of gas (it was almost empty) + £150 credited to my account. Calor was giving £150 to new customers + a tank of gas.

    Thank you David.

Yes Tammygirl I took advantage of that Calor free deal - Flogas couldn't match it although they were more reliable at deliveries.  Calor haven't put a foot wrong yet this time though - I explained in detail that if they let me down I would take the contract and tear it up!

I am waiting to see what other providers can offer - the 31p per litre is very interesting but I don't know if I qualify for that price - maybe they will get round to answering my queries tomorrow.

    Pippah,

I have just signed with Avantigas for 29 pence per litre year 1 and 32 pence per litre year 2. I do pay rental on the underground tank at around £100 per year though.

I understand that the LPG industry has been compelled to make switching between suppliers a simple process now.

I would suggest that your current supplier is having a laugh at 49 pence per litre. LPG for road use is only around 57 ppl and thats taxed differently.

Yeah Sooty - that would be right - Calor having a laugh!  I am seeing someone today who is offering 33p a litre plus of course the tank rental at the same rate.  I am going to ask if I can have a tap (?) on it to fill my Safefill cylinder and offer it to
others.  I will see if Avantigas operate here.  Thanks for the tip.

I tried Avantigas but was a bit put off by them farming out delivery in this area - so today I have gone for LPG Direct who are reasonably local.  Apparently I am to expect a call from Calor offering me the moon to go back to them and then threatening to remove the tank!  It seems they are good at terrorising old ladies!  Well I have been warned!

..thanks for reporting back Pippah, I need to do more searching for my local area, don't think I have that much choice though. I didn't like some of the reviews for Avantigas. Hope it goes ok for you.

The guy who came today said that Avantigas use Flogas to make their deliveries - and it begs the question if Flogas are busy making their own customers happy - what happens to the others?  When I was with Flogas they were always very reliable - but interestingly
they haven't got back to me with a price and I contacted them by phone and email!

Interesting that Flogas do the deliveries for Avantigas, I do know they deliver up here for other companies too. I've not heard anything yet from my inquiry with Calor, to early to tackle Flogas yet as they won't discuss prices until you are near the end
    of your contract.

Are you certain the contract holds water?  I believe Calor try to scare people out of leaving - by saying they are tied in.  Might be worth checking.  Interestingly too - Calor charge business customers a fraction of what I was quoted!  Comforting really
as I wouldn't want the CC to be ripped off as well as us small guys!

It surprises me that Avantigas use other companies for delivery. My new underground tank was installed by Avantigas employees with brand new Trucks, vans and tools. They struck me as a company that had invested heavily in the business.

Also the delivery of gas was by an Avantigas employee with yet again a brand new tanker. I understand Avantigas is the former Shell gas business now owned by an American parent company.

The rep told me that they are the primary supplier of LPG to Calor and Flogas?

I dont know if thats correct though.

I don't know where you are Sooty but Avantigas definitely told me today that they would arrange for another company to deliver if I went with them - and it was someone else who told me they use Flogas.  I am quite a way from Manchester so it made sense but
it also made sense that a proxy deliverer might not be as diligent as a small local company with a reputation to protect.

I am in North Nottinghamshire Pippah, very close to the Lincolnshire Border.

We are about 3/4 hour away from Chesterfield where I believe Avantigas has a large facility. Perhaps thats why I got supplied by Avantigas own fleet.

Incidentally when I decided my new house would be LPG fuelled Neither Calor or Flogas bothered to reply to my request for them to contact me.

I suppose the real test will be when my contract expires in two years time.

I think you are on the right track Sooty - I must admit that my email to Flogas did say if they couldn't match Calor's price don't bother to contact me!  So I guess they are on the pricey side.  I would say just remember to shop around in 2 years time!
I am not always good about shopping around but recently I am getting better - swapped electricity provider earlier this year - and also queried the renewal of my caravan insurance - because of having a claim a couple of years ago - I wasn't too keen on swapping
    - but I queried the renewal - pointing out that my caravan is not worth the same amount as last year and got about £40 deducted from their initial quote!

Well I was warned Calor would come back to me and offer me the earth!  No Kidding - they reduced their price to 30p per litre AND £150 of free fuel - fixed for 6 months and then variable afterwards.  HOW DARE they try and charge me 49p a litre?????  I am
now wondering how to approach the other guy - but since he has offered to install a tank free of charge in the Barn I am thinking of moving to - I may just stay as I am.  I think it is just so BAD of Calor to try it on.
