70 years old, new licence or not?
My wife asked me to check my driving licence as my 70th is almost here. Looking at my licence it says it expires in 09/12/2018, I will be 72.
Bearing in mind the expiry date, do I ignore it and renew at 70?

Best ask DVLA.

When was it issued? Perhaps you have already lost all your additional privileges.

hi, do you still have a paper licence or the new card type.... driving licence should expire at age of 70 then you will need a medical which issue's you with a 3 year licence and so forth, so can't understand why yours run to 72.....is your birthday correct
on licence, but i would contact dvla to confirm whether yours does expire when your 72, as for entiltlement if you have the card licence it does say when each entilitment expires, but as long as you pass medical cant see you losing any of the entilitments,
as a hgv driver we have medical every 5 years to keep our entilitement for such vehicles........contact DVLA better to be safe than ended up with a huge fine.....0 -
It is normally 70 so I would definitely check with DVLA - and I think you only need a medical for certain weights - I just ticked medical boxes to carry on with car and caravan (although I had one cross in the box that they had to check out with doctors
a process that took them 10 MONTHS to do!) Finally got my licence a few weeks before my 71st birthday! I felt glad that I hadn't destroyed my old paper one as directed on the form - as I felt somewhat insecure without a licence even though I had several
letters from them saying it was OK to drive as long as the docs had said I could.0 -
Age to renew is certainly 70. Full details in a sticky at the top of Caravan & Motorhome Chat
It does seem that accurate DOB was a bit lax in the past ....especially if your first licence was the tiny little 'red book' which was handwritten and subsequently transcribed into a green paper licence.
Wife had trouble at 70 because her DOB at DVLA was a few days different from her (correct) date as per her passport. She had to go through the usual rigmarole of birth certificate / marriage certificate / etc.

hi sorry no medical under 3500kg but when you turn 70, the DVLA will send you a form to renew your licence for a maximum of three years. You need to declare on this form that you are still fit and able to drive safely, so it remains your responsibility to
judge this.If you’re not confident you can make this judgement yourself, you can get professional advice from a Mobility Centre.
You will have to renew your licence in this way every three years.
phone DVLA as DOB must be wrong on licence, you can check this yourself on card licence at front look at number 3 which states DOB, if correct then DVla should send you a form to either renew or hand in your licence....hope this helps

Date of birth (in an odd format) also forms part of the Driver Number. Are they shown the same?

Miracle of miracles....I phoned up DVLA and got through within 3/4 minutes. Nice young man said that as my licence was renewed at age 68, they gave me 3 years from then, so renewable when I am 72.
Can't believe I made contact so easily.
Thank you for the replies.

Write your comments here...Yes I have found them easy to contact on the telephone - but it still took 10 months to get my 70 yr old licence! ANd then they were foolish enough to send me a Customer Satisfaction Questionaire!
I am still surprised you have got an extra 2 years without filling in a medical thingy - but I am sure you deserve it!
I get concerned about insurance and questions they might ask. They seem supreme wrigglers out - Insurance companies that is!
