A former singer is to sue the tax payer via the Police and the BBC  for a million pounds, it is alleged. 

Why -- He has allegedly enough money to keep him in sheer luxury for the rest of his life.  

An exercise in greed IMO.

Oh the former singer  -- Somebody called Harry Rodger Webb  it is alleged

    Former singer?  As far as I'm aware, he hasn't announced his retirement.

    His name is Sir Cliff Richard, having changed his name by deed poll in 1980.

    It might not reach the news as it perhaps won't be seen as newsworthy but my guess is that he'lll donate any money received to charity.

    I suspect it is also the way it was done that didn't help  - watching the police enter your home via the medium of tv.

    I doubt this is about the money. From what we hear there was a police tip off and the media were there filming as it happened. Irrespective of who he is, of how wealthy he is, he has every right to seek redress through the courts in respect of this apparently
    disgraceful treatment.

    He should sue.  Doesn't matter if you're rich or not, the fact is his name has been truly slandered and he should sue.  Wonder how much the BBC got for televising this fiascoUndecided

    If he had been arrested or even charged with an offence and found not guilty, he IMO would be within his rights to seek redress through the courts.

    If the bbc filmed the police carrying oit their duties what's wrong with that.   Its good that the public know that the police carry out their duties without fear or favour.

    If allegations are made against anybody.be they really poor, or lucky to be worth at least forty million pounds the police are dutybound to investigate those allegations

    Being a multimillionaire does not make anybody immune from a police enquiry. IMO

    He announced this weeks ago , good luck to him I say, as for suing for 1million peanuts going by suing figures this day and age , they are getting off lightly

    There's nothing wrong with the police doing their work. However they informed the media of the details of  the "raid" so that the raid could be televised. That stinks! Someone in a suitably high position within the police force should have been sacked for
    such behaviour. I hope Cliff succeeds with his action which hopefully will not only give him retribution, but may also identify the offenders within the police and BBC. As far as the money is concerned I'm sure it will end up in good hands.

    ......and being a multimillionaire doesn't prevent you from seeking redress when you have clearly been wronged, your name slandered and it all televised on national tv.

    That was not an example of police investigation, that was an all guns blazing, knee jerk reaction to a wrongful tip off that the BBC and the police probably thought would go some way to take the attention away from their handling of Jimmy Saville. Clearly
    backfired and good luck to Sir Cliff - sue the pants off them and have that filmed for all to see - as Jill says, I've also heard him say previously that he'll donate the money, so some worthy cause will benefit from the fiasco.

    I would like to see the police informant sued for every penny he/she has got. That was the worst aspect of this saga.

    Yes, it was very badly done by the police and they should learn a lesson. There was a media frenzy at the time I remember because it was actually announced!! How stupid is that??

    I think it's shameful that 'allegations' can be published, against anybody, and they are therefore 'guilty until proved innocent'.  EVERYONE, regardless of celebrity status, should be innocent until proved guilty.

    OK we made a mistake with some celebrities  but that doesn't mean than anyone who is famous can be accused of anything without any redress.

    I don't understand why he doesn't just get on with his life now that the episode is over and done with.

    I agree that suing the taxpayer (effectively) achieves nothing, but keeps the matter in the public eye.

    Incidently, I inadvertently listened to a bit of the Chris Evans show the other day and he was playing a Cliff record.......coincidence?

    That former singer of the 60's and 70's has for the last few decades spun a myth around himself of being a goody two shoes and extollig his virtues of Forgiveness/love/and goodness. 

    Now we see  that the myth and spin has come crashing down, when there is a chance of topping up his vast fortune by a million pounds or so of taxpayer's money. 

    All of a sudden there is no sign of forgiveness and the true character of the man comes through for the first time in decades.. 

    Working people are only human and mistakes can be made in all jobs.  

    IMO a public apology by the BBC and Police and a couple of handshakes all round should have been all that was required to put an end to the situation.  

    Vindictiveness and litigation is an unbecoming trait especially for those who continually claim to be ever so full of goodness and love.

    Sorry, but I am closing this thread. Club Together is not the place to discuss cases that are about to be subject to legal proceedings either about to start or in the process. Also some are starting to make comments about the person concerned that they can't substantiate which could  bring the Caravan Club into disrepute. I will be reporting this to the Community Manager who will make a decision on whether this thread remains closed or is reopened.
