Back home today from our lovely trip to the Norfolk coast. Amazing weather so all very relaxing. Lovely site but rubbish WiFi so gave up in the end - too frustrating. Had a great afternoon at Felbrigg Walked garden. Looked beautiful in the sunshine. Whereabouts in Norfolk are you Helen? Glad you had such a good trip to Yorkshire Tammy girl. Very fond memories of that area as youngest son lived there on and off for many years. Hope everyone who has been or is still away has had or is having a good time.

Survived the flights home. Thank goodness for e-passorts. Huge queue long before passport control but official shouted e-passports keep left. Through in minutes but hubby's never works so had to wait for few minutes whilst it was sorted. But which time cases
through. Taxi waiting and onto a stationary ish m25. That said was home within 1.5 hours 3 hours after landing. Garden not as bad as feared but some areas of grass very long whilst bits where sun reaches for longer scorched, apparently half hours rain in the
couple of months we were away. House roasting and a bit stale flung open all windows and put water heater on. Went up to bed to find upstairs radiators hot motorised value issue quickly sorted by hubby. Fell sound asleep well it had been 50ish hours since
I'd left my bed! To wake soon after boiled as we under winter duvet . Unpacked and visited mum. Fish and chips on the green in Writtle then collected our lawn mower lent to my aunt as unable to cut her grass. Swopped duvet to summer weight one before using
it at 9pm. Almighty storm 3am still rumbling in 6.45 when sky horrible yellow. Now 7.30 raining and yellow gone. Must buy food today son girlfriend and dog arrive Saturday for two weddings over the weekend. Plus new baby cards . Just had breakfast in bed
    - since only shopping to do as gardening off!! Good job I got washing done yesterday far too hot to iron! Enjoy your days folks.

Glad you are safely back B2.  It must have been a relief to get to your bed.  Interesting to hear you mention Writtle as it has featured a lot on BBC Look East as it has been the hotest place in the region this past week.Laughing Lucky
you getting your washing dry.  Mine is still waiting as is the gardening.  Lovely surprise last night.  We were asked to babysit our 2 grandsons as DIL going out with a friend and our son said he needed to go out for an hour.  He came back with our lovely
20 year old grand-daughter (his daughter from his frist marriage).  Said he thought it would be nice for us all to spend the evening together as we hadn't seen her for a while.Happy

Well B2 you've arrived safely and now you're busy once more! Hope you have a good weekend. And everyone else, sounds as though the good weather has made some good holidays, If you're off on the off hope it all goes well. We are dry over in the SW after big
storms earlier in the week. Nice cool breeze just now too.

    Hi Bakers2

We are planning a trip to New Zealand (South Island) for early next year.

Going to fly direct this time, Australia first to spend time with family and then on to NZ.  Our preferred flight operator is Emirates on the A380 but can't get Emirates on the way back to Heathrow it will be Quantas.

The flight is Christchurch to Melbourne to Dubai and then Heathrow. I think from my research that the flight uses the A380 but just wondered if you had used this service.

Last time we used a Quantas flight it was 8 uncomfortable hours on what seemed to be a very cramped plane.  No legroom or elbow room.

Welcome back Bakers2, isn't it nice to get back to your own bed.

Sunny if windy day today, first load of washing out and drying second load just finished (I'll hang it out in a minute) new bank account set up with one bank, all very easy and quick, money now deposited and earning 5% Smile Other
bank still asking for alsorts of verification stuff but will persist as its another 5% rate. Think I will need to keep a log of what's where as its starting to get a bit complicated, OH has given up so I'm doing his aswell.

Need to go shopping running out of everything and the kids are coming to stay for a few days before they fly out to Malta.

Thanks milliehull. Rain definitely stopped play here! Writtle is about a mile or so away from our house. Very old village with large village green and duckpond. Writtle college gathers weather info beautiful building on site of King John lodge. Well worth
a look if you are in the area along with Hylands Estate.

What a wonderful surprise for babysitting a very thoughtful son.

Just catching up on this thread, only one I've had time for for last weeks, shopped and tidied away made banana ice lollies for desert tomorrow, before going off for my reflexology this afternoon. Planning on quite hours for the test of the day.

Hi we always use A380 not managed to get it into Auckland as only Emirates, who as you stay stop in Oz before NZ, and Singapore airlines use them to Auckland,no idea about Christchurch sorry.  We prefer Singapore, expensive but quality and this year we have
used Malaysian twice, good but not quite Singapore level but at least £600 cheaper than Singapore on each occasion not to be sneezed at, when doning the trip twice in nine months!! (That's another story which you may have read on here).  Both fly A380 to about
halfway Kuala Lumpur or Singapore 12 hours approx, and A330 to Auckland again about 12 hours. Just two up and downs whereas Emirates is Dubai, not so far, Perth to Auckland.

A380 reasonably roomy inches count .  Happy to discuss our email address should be on my proifile page.

Yes Tammygirl tour oiwn bed us lively although we had a very comfy one whilst away, it had an egg box topper.

Glad to hear you're getting bank accounts sorted. In these times or dire interest rates the only way to go is chasing decent rates and that does get complicated I have a list if allaccoubts we hold with rough totals updated annually, in the box with all
our paperwork so kids know where to find it once were gone! But I also keep my own  books to keep track of things .

Enjoy time with your sin and family before they move.

Thanks TG, hopefully the weather will improve as it is lashing rain right now!

Took just over 3 1/2  hours to get here though only about 120 miles, very heavy traffic in Boston, Kings Lynn and Norwich, but mainly going in the opposite direction.

Dry start, but rain set in after Kings Lynn, a lot of water on the roads.  Eased up for a while just as we got here, but before we got properly pitched it started again, even heavier.

Had lunch and now waiting for the rain to ease up, but it's not looking good. Still need to level properly and organise water and waste.

Have been to 3 MH places but not seen an example of any of the models we had shortlisted as dealer stocks are very low. Having looked at several models we have sort of got an idea of the width of the slimmer vans, the size of the various shower types, the
space (or rather lack of space!) in the kitchen area, and the amount of living space up front.

Lack of kitchen space did not go down well with OH, but the rest we could live with.  After much discussion, we have decided that having the air con IS essential after all.

We did price up the 2 Hymers on our list at the dealer in Telford, they came out (new) at £70k and £80k by the time we had added the bits we felt necessary
    Surprised

The weights on those would however work for us.

Very little discount offered on those prices (only £1500) and a derisory offer on our van if we traded it in.  Plus it is 6+ months to order anything.  They also declined to move over our air con from the caravan, but rather wanted to sell us a new system
    @ £2k+.

There is still a Dethleffs model we would like to see, plus a couple of Chaussons and a few other makes, but most others we have seen in the layout we want,  are working out longer and/or wider,  and therefor too heavy.

Basic vehicle weight is OK, but as BB said earlier, by the time you get the spec up to something acceptable it gets too heavy.  The basic vehicle spec is very poor IMO, I doubt anyone ever buys just the basic model.

So, it looks like the only option would be to lose the fixed bed, which I am not happy with.

Or I need to get my C1 licence back.

Nothing decided as yet, we may still go to the NEC in October, but we are meantime leaning slightly more towards keeping the caravan and possibly changing the car next year.

I have just lost my C1 part of my licence on reaching 70.  We have been reading your search with interest KjellNN as we have had similar thoughts about a motorhome. We decided on balance to keep to a caravan due to the same reasons you have mentioned. Also
OH was so anti having to use public transport and losing the freedom of our car whilst away.  Good luck whatever you decide.

Cooler today and much more comfortable for walking. Fortunately we missed the forecast storms last night which all went further east than expected.

This morning we drove to Ilminster to walk from there. Very pleasant riverside walk then to the village of Donyatt and back over Herne Hill. Ilminster is an interesting little town with a large minster church (who's have thought it?) and lots of traditional shops, a nice place to mooch around.

Sitting out in warm sunshine again this afternoon. Happy

Kj and heddlo the reason we changed from motorhoming to caravanning 9 years ago was because Mr H had reached the age when he was going to lose his C1 licence. We looked at smaller motorhomes and couldn't find one we liked so decided to change to a caravan
as they offered more room and comfort. Also we felt the days when we could cycle for miles when we wanted to go off site were coming to an end. We are now on our 2nd caravan and love it. Pros and cons for us - for travelling the motorhome is easier, for comfort
whilst on site the caravan is better

We moved down the coast to St Valerie sur Somme yesterday.

Site is within walking distance of the town (which is extremely pleasant) and at £14 per night including tax, very good value. There is a huge heated indoor pool, tennis courts, volleyball etc. (but only if you want it, of course).

Reversed polarity on our pitch.......got to use the tester and the adapter cable at last!

We realised that we have been to this town before, but many years ago. Had a lovely walk along the estuary then back up through the town.

Today we drove to Le Treport. Some light rain (quite a change after the swealtering hot weather of the past few days). We walked from there, along the river, across the lock gates and across to Mers le Bains, where we had a sandwich (just love that fresh
French bread) sat on the sea front.

Filled up with diesel on the way back - 1.075 euros a litre....about £0.91, even at the current rubbish exchange rate.

Tomorrow we plan to move on to somewhere near Fecamp.

Been surprised at the number of people here, especially French holiday-makers. I thought they only went on holiday in August?

Kj, sorry to hear your search hasn't yet borne fruit, it took us a few years to find one we liked that ticked all the boxes. We haven't got any restrictions yet on the license, so could change to a bigger one with fixed beds if wanted but we are happy with
the one we have as its very spacious and has loads of storage. Not having a car to get about in can at times be a drawback especially in the UK, that's where the A frame comes into its own. I can see that in the future we will go back to a caravan but I very
much doubt it will be a big one.

Fine day again here at Lockmaben, but less humid than yesterday. Drove over to Ae Forest for a walk before our picnic lunch and then I rode the blue route, mainly quite boring on forest roads, and a bit of the red route which was more demanding. It's been
about a month since I was last out on the bike so feeling a bit stiff now.

We got quite a big caravan for our first one tammygirl as I think we were trying to recreate the room in our motor home. We then decided that we wanted a smaller lighter van so bought a new one 4 years ago. It is ideal for us - a nice roomy lounge and kitchen
with a much smaller toilet/shower. We all have to decide what best suits our own needs.

Couldn't agree more, we had a 7.4m caravan (our last one) lovely van really roomy, fixed singles etc. but we've found we don't need one that size again, I think like you we would go for a lighter/smaller van that is easier for pitching. While away this last
few days we called into a caravan dealer for a look at the new vans to see what was on offer. We looked at Elddis, Coachman, Swift and Lunar but didn't see anything that would tempt us back to a caravan just yet. The vans we saw were very nice just didn't
fit the bill for us. As you say we have to decide what suits us best.

lovely morning here today, playing golf with my brother, should be nice...

funny old world, before retiring, we played (pretty much) every weekend (team and social) now i have all this time on my hands, i have to work hard to fit in three or four games a year with him....should be fun, i even went to the 'range' yesterday to see if the clubs still knew what a golf ball was.....Wink

OH's electric bike in for a service last week, scheduled for Tuesday.....as we were in Wellington for a couple of days, i put it in the back of the van, pulled up outside the shop, opened the garage and just wheeled it out......couldnt collect it in the van as we had to be back for Monday, so had to go back down to collect it in Fiat 500!Embarassed

talk about 'chalk and chicken' (AMOBUTS) but got it in there (tailgate shut, too) to the total astonishment of the shop owner...(i did have some sneaky practice prior to taking it down, and did have to take the front wheel off.....)....if it werent for the incessant heavy traffic i could have riden it back..Sad

still, runs like a dream, now.....Happy

quick update on pal's son.....he finally recovered consciousness on Thursday, 11 days after his accident, seems like he is now 'stable', not sure if the pelvis plating has been done, but he now knows about his condition (including the leg) but probably not able to really grasp this yet......

pals still 'living' at the hospital, hopefully this 'improvement' in his condition will give them a breather, too....
