Does anyone know why geared vehicles are more fuel efficient than auto's? Mine(gears) is 5mpg more than the same auto version. I would have thought the auto would shift at the optimum time & make it better mpg-but it doesn'tSad

Because torque converter autos are not direct  drive untill they get to higher gears unlike a manual. Automated manuals are usually as good as the manual hence their popularity with car makers because it makes their cars' fuel economy look good.

I wish I had gone auto years ago so much easier.  It was my left hand that took time to train not the foot!  The only thing I found took learning was changing down by the levers (2of them will change down in the Mitsubishi) as opposed to hitting the break in icy conditions.  We don't get a lot of practice on ice it seems but I feel it's important to know how!

Going back to manual sometimes is the strange bit, expecting the car to change gear by itself and having to remember to do it!Wink

Three auto's in our house, 2 'proper' torque converters - one (Merc) is auto only & the other has the option to manually change (Citroen) & an automated manual Smart. And our daughter's 3 pedal Fiat when she makes an appearance.
