Excellent news, wish this was the case every Sunday. As a nation we seem to be hostage to the supermarkets
I agree, one time when shops shut at 5.30 there could be a case for Sunday trading, but now shopping centres are open till 9 or 10pm, supermarkets the same, some 24 hours, is there a need for Sunday opening? I have been very lucky in never (well once or
twice voluntarily) having to work Sundays and wish that more people could also have that. I don't use shops on Sundays if i can help it. But you could argue I use club sites over a weekend so am I being a hypocrite?0 -
well if your kids are grown up or you're retired then yes, but when your, not yours, someones chlidren at are school and they have the weekend off and you as their parent have to work weekends when do you see them? take them out? play with them? Yes you
get the time off somewhere else but its when they are at school.0 -
The short Sunday opening times always catch us out when in England on holiday. As does Sunday closing when abroad.
We generally shop on the way back to the van after a day out, and when retired all days are pretty much the same, so remembering to shop on the Saturday as the next day Sunday is not easy!

HaHa we've been caught out a few times when touring, funny thing is when we lived in Germany many years ago the shops closed at 13.00 on a Saturday until Monday, they also closed at 18.00 every night, we were suprised when we visited 7 years ago how things
have changed.0 -
The supermarkets here sort the shifts so weekends are staffed by students or people without children. I'd imagine most do.
No different to a Saturday either. It's just an old fashioned hangover to a world that has long gone
When she was a student, our daughter did the weekend shifts, especially Sundays as there was extra pay involved.
At that time, nobody had to work on a Sunday if they objected on religious grounds, don't know if this is still the case.

Am I to understand that the Sunday Trading Act has been repealed?

No CY. Easter Sunday has been the exception to the rule since it was introduced. Few shops have ever opened on Easter Sunday. At least in England, as far as I am aware.

M Ps were outvoted last week to allow local councils to decide there Sunday opening hours , strange when the SNP voted against when they have no restrictions on Sunday hours

Why not do something different on Sunday , you never know you might enjoy it
it's because I'm doing something different on Sunday that I want shops open after 4pm.
I do all my shopping at night if possible. Not worth wasting useful hours on
