Boaty McBoatface
A new polar research vessel to be launched in 2019 was to be named by members of the public. A competition has been held to come up with names and the public has been asked to vote for their favourite.
The current leader (by a mile) is 'Boaty McBoatface' with 27,000 votes (second place has only 3,000 votes).
I love it!

It is indicative that the trivialisation of issues has become somewhat pervasive in this Facebook/Twitter generation.

It's not an issue. It's naming a boat. You can't get more trivial than that.
International news stories are praising the great British sense of humour. It will be interesting to see what they say when the panel names it something stuffy and boring.

In second place is the Worsley man so I guess there's your future name.
It's not of any great significance to me either way really but I do find the current naming campaign highly amusing. That's probably because I'm from the Facebook generation

Surely folk don't truly think the establishment would launch a Ship to carry out tasks of the magnitude the vessel will be undertaking with the name-'Boaty Mcboatface'? It's just a big laugh. It'll soon die away. I'm sure I saw somewhere it's 2019 when it
will be decided. The Attenborough is my choice-it's got gravitas has that0 -
Can you imagine The Queen saying "I name this ship Boaty McBoatface......"

Nice article in the i newspaper today about allowing the public free rein in these matters.
I like the one about naming a Hump backed whale that was being followed on its journey.
The public decided on "Mr. Splashy Pants". and that is what it was called!

Gravitas or not, it seems the whole world is talking about it so it has given the boat a terrific public profile. And I suspect it will cont to do so if called that. Sachi and Sachi's dream come true!
