I hate the word "Invoice", especially when uttered by a solicitor.

I listened to a young lady speaking on the Countryfile programme and nearly every sentence had the word "like"  repeated numerous times. I lost count how many times she said it.  You know, like.

It's not really the words, but how they're said.  I don't like presenters on TV who talk 'slang', can't pronounce words properly, and can't string a sentence together (but are there perhaps because they look good on the screen).

Not quite 'Bring back Mr Cholmondley-Warner, and received pronunciation' because there's nothing wrong with regional accents, but PLEASE make sure they can 'present' and not just mumble badly pronounced slang and jargon!

Tim Omer, president of Swiss-owned Emmi Roth USA, accepted the win, saying, “This is very humbling. Our cheesemakers in Monroe, our cheesemakers in Platteville and our cheesemakers in Shullsburg, they are killing it every day.”

Anyone care to translate, what are they killing everyday or do they mean we are producing to the limit of perfectionTongue OutHappy

The phrase " me and ..." seems pretty common these days. I know it's just a small grammatical point, but surely ".... and I" just sounds better?

"Different to" when it should "different from" really grates with me - but even the BBC seem to condone it these days.

I dislike 'can I get' as opposed to 'could I please have' - often heard by youths in pubs. Also "Cool"

I dislike the overuse of the word 'absolutely' on the television, when uttering 'yes' would suffice.

"Excellent" and "Brilliant" are also overused in much the same way.

Not specifically a word, but still irritating to me at least, when did weather forecasters start saying "in the overnight period" rather than ...er..."overnight"? Undecided

I was once advised that bath does not contain an 'r'.  Next thing we know there will be a claim that 'Geordie' is received pronunciation. Wink

    Tomarto, tomayto!

Hmmm - won't rise to the bait Wink

However the southern-based "received pronunciation" doesn't stop them putting an extra "r" in drawing does it?

At least those lovely Geordies don't irritate me by saying "drawring" !!  That is definitely not well received pronunciation here at Bugs Towers in deepest Northumbria!!

    Cheers

"Basically". Lots of people start sentences saying basically and it is basically unnecessary, basically over used and basically a waste of time. Oops

Back in the Day, where did that one come from.  What day do they mean, today, yesterday, last Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, etc.  Irritating innit, oh lord, that's another one!

You 'was' doing instead of you 'were' doing. Really really gets my goat.

Also, references to seeing you next Tuesday: I find these totally repulsive but they seem to have slipped into everyday language (well, where I work anyway).

I have trouble with people pronouncing words containing 'th' as though they contained 'f'.

For example, "fings' instead of "things".

"I fought" instead of "I thought"

Also, references to seeing you next Tuesday:

That one does make sense if it is used to mean the Tuesday after this Tuesday. [does not make much sense if today is a Tuesday - in which case substitute Wednesday.]

Guilty as charged, Moulesy.......even when you pointed it out I couldn't see what was wrong and had to check it elsewhere (where there was a spellchecker!).

Must have been my mis-spent yoof.......

So, this is literally such an awsome thread. Like, how do you come up with all these words you don't like - it's so cool.
