I accept again that i might be in the monority, but I refer you back to my first para on the last post. If as you say it is quite proper for the Radio 1 listeners to migrate to Radio 2, and in so doing change it. So where do you suggest that the earlier Radio 2 listener goes now?
You appear to be saying that we should accept it without demour, but you have not explained why the new generation of listeners should have Radio1 and Radio 2. So Should we now try and change Radio 3 and push those people out?
This is in danger of bogging down so I will pull out and leave it to you.

Hi Brian, good to see you back!I can't stand Chris Evans. He's a juvenile! He's the one who gets car sick and he's supposed to be doing Top Gear! That has to be the joke of the decade - another cock up by Auntie Beeb. Ken Bruce I like. Dry humour and very quick. Jeremy Vine is OK. Has radio 2 been the same since Sir Terence left?I don't think so! Radio 1 seems to be for people with 3 in their lives thats either years or IQ so you have radio 3 or 4. I'm like Jill. I'm soon playing my own music by Bluetooth!

Radio 2 is a bit dated for me although Jeremy Vine's show can be quite interesting at times but he irritates me as he seems to have the knack of shouting when he is talking normally. I agree with a couple of the others and listen to Planet Rock a lot. Also
worth a listen is Arrow Rock Radio, non-stop rock without interuptions apart from the odd station identification. Keep on rockin'.0 -
I do like Johnny Walkers sounds of the 70s show on a Sunday Afternoon.

Mike Sweeney on BBc locol radio from Manchester is our choice.

Is he still on the radio? ....... I used to listen to him years ago on Picadilly Radio
Indeed he is MM every morning 9 to12 and again on sunday at 12 with Sweeneys sixties classics.I think he is 68 or 69 now but he,s still going strong.

I love Radio 2, apart from Ken Bruce. I cannot stand him, or Pop Master. Makes me cringe every time. Vanessa standing in for Jeremy Vine is unbearable too. Her sing-songy tone with things like 'And here we have Veronica, whose son was kidnapped by paedophiles and murdered in a skip. Poor you Veronica! How are you? What a dreadful story!' is just awful.

I've just been watching Tipping Point on ITV - to win £15000 viewers have to answer this question -
"Which of the following is a play by William Shakespeare -
A: Tom & Jerry
B: Laurel & Hardy
C: Romeo & Juliet"
Seems to me there's dumbing down and then there's just plain insulting!

I'm with Moulesy on the subject of dumbing down. Both the BBC and ITV are aiming their programme output at the lowest common denominator.
If the trend continues, programmes like the Jeremy Kyle show will soon become the most highbrow of the lot.
It's about time the BBC gave something back for all the millions of pounds they rob from the British public due to the license fee.
Give us programmes which allow those of us with some intelligence to be challenged and entertained.

I was reading through this thread from the start and did not recognise any of the names mentioned until I got to "William Shakespeare". This may be because I found a long time ago a feature of these new fangled car radios. One can tune to a local station
that gives good traffic information, ensure that "TA" appears on the display, and then play one's own choice of CDs and not have to listen to the radio stations choice of presenter, music or advertising content. The CD is interupted with any traffic news.0 -

Sarah Cox is back with her half wower! So finally gave up and have retuned Clock radio and others in the house away from radio 2.

Looking at tonights listing for BBC channels I can see 12 programmes which would suit people of intelligence and want to be challenged and entertained, Tuesday has 7, I would have trouble finding the time to watch them al,l so how much culture do you want?

That viewer question is really just a phone in draw, not sure if the question is there to keep it a "test of skill" for legal reasons, lets face it Tipping Point is low brow entertainment anyway

MM, I understand what you are saying but the point I was making and just does not seem to be understood is why is the BBC turning Radio 2 into such a zany type of Station when radio 1 is still there and more akin to that sort of programming?
The earlier post that suggested that many of the people who have agreed with must be over 60 may well be correct. But are they suggesting that at that age we have no right to have a view? Again I say why dumb down Radio 2 when Radio 1 already caters for
that sort of programming?Now donning battle bowler and taking shelter!

I do think when R2 became R1.5 and started playing The Sex Pistols, the listeners who enjoyed a more middle of the road sound such as Matt Monro & Val Doonican were forgotten, there was probably room for another station to replace the old R2

"......that it is we, the listeners, who change as we get older? Naturally, our tastes change over time so we move on to something that suits us better. Is that not why the BBC provide choice - so we can move on when it suits? ......"
To put it in other words, I maintain it is us who change rather than the radio stations but we don't see this in ourselves unless we widen our perspectives and look at the bigger picture.

Yes TW. You have your point of view and that is your right. But i have a differing opinion and that is my right. - I remain of the view that R2 has moved too far from its original positioning and now occupies the position previously suited to R1.
I am sure that you are not intending to say that i should not hold those views and should not have the temerity to say them.
So perhaps we should just agree to disagree!

To my mind R2 occupies the same position as ever which is a more 'grown up' version of R1, whereas it is I who have changed and no longer have an interest in its output.
Of course I'm not trying to deny you the right to your views, TF, and I'm rather disappointed you would even use those words. I am, however, attempting to persuade you to see the other side of the coin - to consider other views - to contemplate alternatives - to open your mind. Clearly, I failed.

Along with radio 2 dumbing down. BBC news this morning on CH1 was spoiled by some news reader who is leaving the BBC having an outside broadcast leaving tour around his personal venues. First time I have ever switched the BBC news off because of purile broadcasting.. If the guy is leaving -- Just GO.!!! nobody else is interested.
