Radio 2 Dumbing Down?
Is it me, or is BBC Radio 2 going through a dumbing down phase.
Chris Evans is off at the moment, he can be bad enough at times, but the female standing in for him has turned banality into an Art form. Blathering on about her "half wower" whatever that is. Steve Wright keeps on about "Serious Jockin" Whats that? Is he talking about riding horses?
The use of the English language has been abandoned by the BBC. Radio 2 was a replacement for the light programme. Radio 1 was the intended programme for the person who required none stop pop music and slight madness but Radio 2 seems to want to outdo Radio !.
Have now moved over in the morning to Heart FM which does mix music up fairly well. Classic FM is fine but you can get too much of its more limited music score.
I just wish that Radio 2 could be a little more sane. Ken Bruce is good!

I tend to agree. I can only listen for a limited time before it brasses me off and I reach for a CD.

Planet Rock is good!

IMO Ken Bruce is the only decent presenter on Radio 2. The rest of the presenters are rubbish, the choices of music are rubbish, the standard of spoken english is rubbish, the radio 2 programmes have been dumbed down so much that the whole station would be better it they broadcast complete silence all day.
There I go - sitting on the fence Again !!!!

Hardly ever listen to it, tune in mostly to Radio 4 or local radio which can be very dumbed down but handy for travel etc. Shouldn't say that really as son is a part time presenter in a local town, but he's done some good interviews.

Radio 4 listener here, although I do get fed up with the amount of times a programme is broadcast in the week - without the podcasts! Used to listen to Radio 2 for The News Hudlines and others. Haven't found comdedy on there for years.
Rarely listen to local radio as it is so banal, tend to have traffic on on the radio when travelling distances and just the bits either side of the bulletin drive me mad. Hate it if the hairdresser's is playing local radio rather than CD's as whilst you're
in the chair there's no escape.0 -
Classic FM or R4 for me generally plus CDs on long journeys.

There was a time when punctuality was paramount on R2. Now presenters often over run the time slots. Chris Evans is the worst offender, especially when it comes to the news .....

I've stopped listening to Radio 2 first thing in the morning unless the 'Ginger whinger' is on holiday. I'm sick of him and his idea of playing msic so that he can talk all over it and carry on as if anything he has to say is more important than the news.
Not too keen on Sarah Cox either.Great to hear Brian Matthew on Saturday morning. 87 years young and still going strong.

Planet Rock is good! I
i have to disagree ....Planet Rock is brilliant have it on all the time

We only listen to three programmes on Radio 2, Brian Matthews Sounds of the Sixties on a Saturday morning, Tony Blackburn with Pick of the Pops on Saturday afternoon, and Johnnie Walker with Sounds of the Seventies on Sunday afternoon.
Otherwise it's Radio 4.

Seems we are differant, neither of us can stand Ken Bruce so don't listen to the morning programmes. We like Heartland FM and Classic FM but I used to listen to Steve Wright. Really only listen to Radio when in car/MH for the travel news. Mostly listen to
CD's at home.0 -
I listen to R2 all day long....can't abide any of the others available....plus it's the only radio station available to me all day.
Can't stand Vanessa, prefer Sarah Cox to Chris Evans in the morning, Ken Bruce is OK (& not because he's Scots too) as are Jeremy Vine & Steve Wright.
2 weeks of purgatory coming up for me as Jeremy's on holiday & Vanessa's sitting in.....AARRGGHH!
Agree with you TF about Wrighty and his "seriousjockin...without the "g""......right proper PITA.

I listen to an hour or so of Vanessa on my way to work ..... she's kinda grown on me - apart from the gut wrenching happy birthday bit at about 0615, and hands down better than Sahra Kennedy that she sort of took over from. Again Sahra Cox has grown on me
too ..... maybe cos she's from the town next door. Steve Wright has been doing the same show for the past 30 yrs ..... I'm so Angry I could slam the phone down!! .... maybe time for him to think about hanging his headphones up0 -
Chris Evans I refuse to listen to, Ken Bruce Is the high point, Jeremy Vine Is usual;y interesting, Steve Wright is appalling - thankfully I can get 6 music and Radcliffe and Maconey in the afternoon in the car. Fortunately with DAB there is a slecetion
of less banal presenters to listen to0 -
Classic FM and Radio 3 makes me depressed, I do like a bit of Status Quo so I can practce my head banging for the Dance Nights down in Catalonia, but I do really like Magic FM and Smooth Radio, both easy listening and not much gobby DJ's

I have to take issue with "riba" who appears to be saying its OK to move out of Radio 1 into Radio 2, as long as Radio 2 becomes just like Radio 1 ! Surely that is why the two stations were created to cater for 2 entirely different types of audience.
Riba appears to be saying weve moved out of Radio 1 into Radio 2 which must now become as Zaney as Radio 1. So if you follow that Logic where are the traditional Radio 2 listenrs supposed to go?

I think you have totally misunderstood Riba, TF.
I see nothing to take issue with. Riba is stating one point of view from experience and does not appear, to me, to be saying what you think.

TW, I know that I am good at misunderstanding, but what was i supposed to understand from riba's comment, & if he is right, what are the older traditional listeners to the earlier style Radio 2 supposed to do? Curl up and quietly Die off?
So if that is the correct approach, the new more zany listener can now occupy Radio 1 AND Radio 2? Is that what you are saying?

You're putting words into my mouth, TF.
Have you never considered that it is we, the listeners, who change as we get older? Naturally, our tastes change over time so we move on to something that suits us better. Is that not why the BBC provide choice - so we can move on when it suits? To expect
the producers to cater for your or my tastes as they change would leave a lot of people very unhappy. It would be selfish and intransigent of us to demand that. Radio, like us, evolves constantly to keep up with the modern world.0 -

Listen to Radio 2 all day as it's on at work and we changed from commercial radio as couldn't stand the adverts!
Can't stand Sara Cox at all - have to switch off. Much prefer Chris Evans in a morning (although don't like him on tv!!!). Like Jeremy Vine and can tolerate Vanessa as stand in although not as good as him.
Ken Bruce is great, as is Tony Blackburn on Saturday and I love Paul O'Grady's programme on Sunday.
Can't stand Liza Tarbuck and squeaky dog toys - nothing more irritating and also can't stand serious jockin without a 'g'. Only just worked out what it means anyway - right above complete PITA!

I like Jeremy VIne his show has always been very good I like his interviewing style, Ken Bruce is good too my favourite part being Pop Master, Steve Wright in the afternoon is very entertaining the non stop oldies are good but I think they should be on a bit longer than half an hour though. Can' be botherd with Chris Evans too loud so generally I don't listern to his show if I can avoid it.

Who remembers Steve Wright in the Afternoon on radio 1 in the eighties.
Brilliant show.
Sid the manager and Gervais the hairdresser spring to mind.
Who were the others?

But who is Steve Wright the rest of the day?
