Should restaurants ban the use of mobiles
Using facebook when in a resturant is considered anti social. One resturant owner has banned the use of mobiles completely. It is rude and distracting when sitting with friends typing and reading social media messages.

I'd be happy with a complete ban on mobiles in restaurants as I find it a tad irritating.
We, as a family, ban mobiles at the dining table but, when eating out, we're often distracted by people at neighbouring tables.
Some folks don't even need phones as they can probably be heard in outer space anyway. Whilst trying to enjoy a relaxing coffee after our meal, we were subjected to one guy having a conversation at full volume.
I recently read a comment from somebody who said that, during an entire meal, a family at an adjacent table comprised mother and father who were both texting and both children were on tablets and nobody spoke a word during a period of almost an hour.

My OH is irritated by my phone pinging to announce an EMail during a meal, although I never bother with it. It's just I forget to put it on silent. The current trend just goes to show how self-obsessed we are becoming.

I always turn my mobile off when somewhere with friends and family. Me and OH went to the Opera House in Manchester one time. Half way through, I asked my OH if he were enjoying the opera and he not really because of the woman next to him texting and it
was lit up (I didn't see it). Anyway, when the second act started, I leaned forward and sure enough there she was texting. With great pleasure I asked her to please shut her phone down as it was very irritating. She nearly jumped out of her seat and hurridly
shut it down and apologised. I always enjoy doing that to people. I hate it when relaxing outside our caravan and someone is speaking, loudly, to someone on the phone. You may think its like talking with who they're with, but its not. I really hate them.

Don't understand why these people can't manage 1 or 2 hours without a mobile when out for a meal or on public transport.
Should definitely ban them similar to the ban on smoking. how irratating was that when the table next to you had finished their meal and then lit up a cigarette and the smoke always made its way to you.

When we go out for a meal nine times out of ten i dont take my phone with me.Should they be banned in eating places ? i,m not sure on that one.I,m not always in favour of stopping people doing what they want but mobiles can be a distraction and annoying at close quarters.

I think it would be a bit OTT to suggest a ban but no reason not to have a few notices asking customer to refrain from their use. My youngest son gets work phone calls all the time it is just part of modern life coupled with the fact that many of the calls
are from people in different time zones. Being the polite chap he is a longer call would be taken away from the eating area.David

I'd ban them in restaurants, theatres etc.. If people want to smoke or use their phones, they can go outside.
Personally, I think that the easier it is to keep in touch, the nicer it is to just 'disappear'. I keep my (very basic) mobile switched off and only my family know the number. I never use it on holiday unless it's an emergency.

I think some places are now starting to make people aware of the fact that not everyone is wanting to be "disturbed" by the continued use in some places,, I note it is nearly always on the screens in theatres and cinemas to switch off ,and I also notice that the quiet coach on trains is always crowded now, the announcements on long distance trains now nearly always ask your consideration of others when using mobiles, so if not a ban in eating places at least prominent signs asking for you to consider others

They are certainly rapidly reaching te "difficult to do without" stage.
Both my Doctor and my Dentist now send out automatic reminder of appointment messages to my mobile, and I understand that our library is about to do the same when approaching renewal times.
My attitude towards them is the same as one previous poster, i.e. If it dosen't directly affect me, I have no complaint to make!

Yes i agree MM most people just cant do without them.
Groups of young lads sit together at work at breaks .... not a word is spoken between any of them as they look at a phone screen.

I spent a lot of time travelling up and down by rail last year. I was utterly astonished, and very pleased that the "quiet" coach was just that. Everything on silent, the odd whisper, couldn't believe how respectful everyone was, came as a complete but welcome

I don't care one way or the other as long as the person with the phone doesn't start thinking that everyone should hear their conversation. If they sit there texting or speaking quietly then I have no problem. I just think it's a sad sight to see a couple
sitting in a pub or restaurant ignoring their dining companion as well as being b****y rude. Personally I'd get up and walk out on them but I wouldn't ban phones, just ask people to be respectful of other diners0 -
It's the modern thing, why should anyone complain as long as they are not in your company why bother about what other people do. Someone as already mentioned juke boxes who complained when they were loud, you just went with the flow. If you object to someone
speaking on the phone as someone else as said a quiet word will probably stop them. For goodness sake live and let live.0 -
Pewrhaps restaurants should have a foil lining in the ceiling and walls. That should disrupt the signal.

I confess I have always been very intolerant of people using mobile phones in restaurants and in theatres and cinemas (which someone mentioned above as if it were the same thing) it is absolutely unforgiveable. I don't think you can ban them in restaurants
but I certainly think it is the height of rudeness to use them - particularly to make calls.Probably the most awful incident I saw once was when I was eating one night alone on a business trip and a guy on the next table conducted a conversation on his mobile phone whilst eating his main course. Imagine listening to that on the other end. UGH!!
Just one other thing - thinking about Molly's comment. I don't really see how you can object to someone using a mobile on your table but condone someone doing it on another table. I agree your not exactly going to interfere with people on other tables but

Bothmy wife and I switch our mobiles off when in a restaurant, cinema cafe or in fact anywhere it may annoy anybody. Only because my wife forgot to switch hers off and got a call half way through a funeral, what made it worse was she had Satisfaction by

So if someone is talking loudly at the next table your going to object to that as well. I myself am a little deaf and naturally speak loud, is that wrong or not, do you know if that person on the next table is deaf, do you know whether it's an emergency or not, as I said earlier live and let live, those people at the next table may have objections to what you are doing. As for trains if you find that someone is doing something objectionable including using a mobile phone you can complain to the staff and they should do something about it because there are bye laws on the railway and disturbing someone is against those bye laws. One other thing with this, are you going down the big brother line and backing a nanny state?

Mobile phones certainaly are helping the young become very rude bad mannered and very ignorant, they are completely oblivious to any body or anything around them, I personally think they should be shut off or placed on silent in most public spaces i e restaurants
ect and deffinatly not allowed to be used at shop checkouts just like petrol fourcourts0
