If you bought a Hotpoint, Creda or Indesit tumble dryer between 2004 and 2015, then there may be a fault which needs a free visit from a service engineer.

Apparently the problem is that fluff can build up and come into contact with the heating element causing a serious fire risk.

If you haven't received a letter (perhaps because of a change of address) then go to https://safety.hotpoint.eu to check whether your dryer is affected.

Ours is one of the affected models!

Please pass this information on to anyone who may also need to check.

Hi, my tumble dryer is also one of the affected models, I was contacted my Hotpoint just before Christmas and was advised that my tumble dryer would be replaced by a new upgraded Whirlpool model.  This sounded fine but they would only offer a white model,
as all my appliances are graphite grey I enquired why it wasn't a like for like swap. The man on the phone said he wasn't authorised to offer any colour but white.  My son contacted Hotpoint via facebook and was told that I could get the correct colour but
would have to wait longer as they were out of stock.  I have contacted them myself since but have yet to receive a reply.  I think some people have contacted Watchdog about the way this is being handled - if you are happy to take a white one you get a brand
new upgraded model, if you're not, an engineer will come and do a repair.  It should be like for like. Sorry for such a long reply, if I hear anything more from Hotpoint I'll post it here.

I registered my details with Hotpoint weeks ago when the story first appeared in the newspapers. I received a phone call the next morning at 8-15 to confirm my details. I was expecting them to send an engineer to check the machine but was told they would
replace it. Three days later a new tumble dryer was delivered. Very impressed with their customer service.

Thanks for the info Valda, mine may be one if the ones affected, as we bought it in the time scale. Don't use it anymore and it is buried at the back of our garage, will have to get OH to clear up his stuff so I can check.

It's really important to empty fluff out of tumble dryers - these models or any others for that matter!  And that comes from years of experience of CoinOperated machines.

My dryer is 44 years old and the fluff collector long since gone but as it's in the garage and seldom used its fine there!  Must check the one I got my daughter - thanks for the heads up ValDa.

Have we had any sun, and fresh air since the end of November.  I can't remember a day when I've been able to hang washing out.

Our dryer is not used all the time, but in weather like we've had recently it's been a godsend.

I e-mailed Hotpoint first week in December and had a quick reply telling me an engineer would contact me to arrange a time to carry out a modification. Heard nothing since. Thay told me not to use it unattended.

We've heard from friends that their dryer was replaced, rather than repaired!  We'll wait and see what happens next.

My method of choice for drying clothes is on the line/whirly gig in the great outdoors.  Despite having various drying area options depending on the time of the year I still use a tumble drier from time to time.  I have been lucky enough to dry both towels
and bed linen outside since Christmas Laughing and they've smelt wonderful when I've got them in.  However, I pick my days for washing
those where possible but 'normal' washing has to be done regardless of the weather, not everything that is worn this time of the year is able to be tumbled
Sad but it does mean that washing haning about on clothes horses/maidens is reduced to a minimum.

Write your comments here...Hotpoint contacted me last Thursday to say an engineer would be with me to carry out a modification to my drier in march. or they would replace my 10 year old drier with a new one for £99 delivered & fitted.

They are delivering a new one tomorrow.

I appreciate that this is a serious issue but, on a slightly lighter note but still perhaps relevant; years ago my MIL complained that her fairly new tumble dryer wasn't doing its job as the clothes were still damp after what should have been ample time
    to dry them.

OH investigated and removed the filter from the rear of the machine.  It was totally clogged up with 'fluff' which he removed. MIL said, "Oh I thought that was part of the filter". She'd been carefully placing the fluff 'mat' back into the filter every time
    she'd used the machine. Undecided

So, if you have any twirlies in your family; might they be doing a similar thing?

Success - we've just been offered a brand new replacement dryer - either a condenser model at £99 or a vented model at £59.00.  We've ordered the vented one as the appliance is in our garage, and the venting kit is already in place.  It's being delivered
on Wednesday - which could have been as quick as Monday but we're busy elsewhere!

    Hi Val

just interested to know, did you get the offer when they arrived to do the repair or beforehand?

The engineer called us on Wednesday this week and wanted to come on Thursday but it wasn't convenient for us.

To be honest my tumble drier is amazing, so fast at drying.  A load of shirts can be dry in the time it takes me to peg them on the line.  Don't really want to change it in any way!!

We reported the problem when I first posted, and had an acknowledgement stating that someone would be in touch about a repair.  Today we had an email stating that we would have to wait until September for an engineer to call but:

If your dryer is over 1 year old and you would prefer not to wait until September for your repair; as a goodwill gesture, we are able to offer a brand new Hotpoint tumble dryer at a reduced price. For the reduced price, we will deliver, install, remove
your existing appliance and replace it with a new dryer.

We decided that as ours was nine years old (approx) that the replacement would be a better idea.

I repaired tumble dryer's for close on 40 years and they have had a build up of fluff on the heaters for all that time. usually it just burns off without any problem or burning indication but if the filters are allowed by the consumer to build up then problems occur.the same thing happens when the flexible vent hose fills with water due to a "u" bend in it causing condensation preventing the airflow venting outside.

I have to say we were meticulous in removing the fluff build up in the filter at the front, (the birds in the garden use it for nesting if you put it out somewhere) but the design left a lot to be desired and fluff appeared to get 'underneath'.  Every few
weeks my OH would poke about down there with the flexible hose on the hoover!.  Our previous Phillips (very old and brown) dryer had a much better filter arrangement.

Have you any idea what repair the engineer will be doing to the  'faulty' driers.

I only ask as my drier is stacked in a really tight space, it's quite a major job to move it!

I was shocked to see the complete devastation brought on a family when one of those driers caught fire and burned the house down.  Every day we are hearing about others of those makes  causing overheating problems.

That there is a recall on the serial numbers affected is laudable but what is unacceptable is the length of time an alleged dangerous machine takes to be made safe.

One of my daughters reported that her drier was one with the affected serial numbers and was told an engineer would be there in nine to ten weeks but just to use the drier during that time.  No way !!.

    Shocking response from Hotpoint
