Gets my goat

What really, really annoys me at Christmas is the hype.  It all starts off in July when I've seen the odd restaurant/hotel advertising bookings for Christmas, and from then it (pardon the pun) snowballs, getting bigger and bigger.  Then it stops - dead -
two days before Christmas on TV by all the adverts for the January Sales, which, I may add, opens on Boxing Day.  Really, I absolutely love Christmas, but all this advertising really annoys the heck out of me.  I even "mute" the telly when the adverts come
on and also hope that the BBC has something good on so I don't have to see the adverts.

Well, that's my rant over for the day

Merry Christmas everyone Innocent

Couldn't agree more, I used to love Christmas when the kids were little but nowadays I can't be bothered by it all, its just a big retail hype. This year it was my turn for the meal, a day preparing it half a day cooking it 1 hour and its over.  Next year
    we are going awaySmile

There was a time when Christmas TV left you spoilt for choice. Now, despite the proliferation of channels with Freeview, Cable & Satellite, there is almost wall to wall dross.

Perhaps we could get a countrywide ban on advertising xmas goodies etc before, say, 20th Dec.  That would help us to keep our equanimity and a cheerful smile on our faces.

I cannot even listen to the radio in the lead up to the 25th it winds me up so much. If you want to celebrate Christmas, with the greatest respect, put up with it. If you are religious and see a reason for it then enjoy. If you are not religious but think
it's a good way to have another good time then that's who the advertisers are aiming at. Christmas is, for many, a chance to over indulge and get pissed Without any reference to what was written that it was supposed to be about.

Me personally, it is the biggest retail con of the 20th and 21st Centuries, based on a story written nearly two centuries ago. Oops, no doubt will now be on the naughty step!

This year was the first Xmas I haven't worked since leaving school and Ive had to retire to get it off, but with 2 chefs in the house Xmas dinner was a breeze most of it prepped Xmas eve cooked the turkey on the morning and everything was put together while
that was resting. The turkey was stripped bare and before we sat to eat the carcas was already in the stock pot for our Xmas soup or as the kids used to call it " guzinto soup" because anything that is left over guzinto it, including sprouts and stuffing.
But have to agree with TG about the time doing prep and then it's finished in around 1 hr but that's just what it's like in a restaurant kitchen, we spent upto 3 days prepping everything and we serve 3 sittings, 12, 2 and 4pm and it's done, leaving us exhausted
but happy knowing we had got it right.

Write your comments here...No problem, I have been called worse things than a lady in my life time And no doubt, a small schooner of sherry had something to do with my faux pas.

In spite of it being really busy, I always enjoy Christmas and the lead up to it, but not the advertising and commercialisation bit.

Write your comments here...totally agree but I think other countries have maintained the real connection and spirit of Christmas. Many parts of Europe celebrate Twelfth Night as the day of giving presents, not Christmas Day. Twelfth Night coincides with the arrival of the Three Kings and their giving of gifts to the Christ Child. In this country the whole thing seems to be far too commercialised and the suggestion is that the change from Twelfth Night as above came about for commercial reasons!
