I would have said at one time that that is a good price but now, it's still 3 times the price of gas for a Safefill or Gaslow system PH.

£17 for my 6 kg cylinder today at club site. Given we run on one cylinder for near two years because we use mainly electricity I cannot see Safefill attracting us.

Just filled a 10kg Safefill at 59p/L totalled just over £13. I calculated the break-even for Safefill versus BPGasLite and Calorlite here

http://www.caravanclub.co.uk/community/discussions/welcome-hobby-talk/tips-for-making-caravanning-touring-cheaper/Safefill-10Kg/rt/1446515/ works out at about 3 fills (30kg - whether that lasts 4 months or 4 years depends on individual usage)

You do need to add the cylinder and gas totals. My feeling is it would take us at least six years and not sure I will still be fit enough by then.

I thought I would do a current evaluation of the relative costs of typical alternatives to a 10 Kg Safefill.

    Product

    Capacity Kgs

    Rental/purchase cost £

    Refill cost £

Kgs to break even with Safefill

    Purchases to recoup Safefill investment

    Safefill

    10

    174

    9.45

    NA

    NA

    Gas-light

    10

    38

    28.32

    72.1

    1plus 7

    Calor-lite

    6

    34

    26

    41.3

    1 plus 6

    Flo-gas steel

    11

    30.62

    25.73

    102.5

    1 plus 9

Based on the principal suppliers publish costs [£] on 26/07/2016 and Nation average price for LPG of 49.83 pence per litre and typical density of 0.53kg/litre.

Of these it should be noted that the Flo-gas 11 kg is a product used well outside the leisure industry. These include the building and roofing trades and my experience is that quite heavy discounting of the
principal suppliers “suggested” retail cost are available. This would bias the figures quoted.

We have a 907 cylinder for our BBQ. We have also been quoted £32 for a refill, however we buy ours from a local caravan supplier (near Louth) at £20. Whilst this is still a high cost for 2.75kg it is convenient to have this size cylinder to suppliment our
vans 6kg calor lite cylinders when abroad. The 907 cylinder being available in Europe of course. Hope this helps.

I do the same, carry a 907 both for a Cadac BBQ and as a back up to a Gas-Light when abroad. I also make a point of exchanging it in France, I own two that means I can take over an empty most years. Just done the checking off of the credit card slips and
even with the sick £/Euro exchange rate we had a few weeks back it cost a little over £18.

Have just spoken to NEIL at Safefill. Anyone going to the IOW and looking for refill facilities on the island will be pleased to know that he has been approached by a retailer on the island who wants to join the Safefill revolution. I will post further details
    as I get them.

I recently decided that I didn't need a big 10kg Gas Light (BP) cylinder so I wanted to exchange it for a 5kg one,at Homebase. I went to the Folkestone branch and was informed that I could not swap a 10kg for a 5kg one! I would have to surrender my 10kg
and get my £12.50 deposit back, when I bought it the deposit was about £38, and then buy a 5kg cylinder for £55.91, this was a deposit of £38 and £21.91 for the 5 kg of gas. thats £4.38 per kg.

I got my £12.50 deposit back and will buy a cylinder in France, where I now am for a while, with the correct fitting for a lot less.

Doc, no one likes to be ripped off, and that was exactly was was attempted with you....

however, as ypu wont know when your french bottle will run out, the chances are ot could be while you are cooking dinner in the UK, and then youd be back to square one...looking for cheap bottled gas in the UK.

of course, you could exchange it on your next french trip, but it might still be partially full....etc, etc...

some folk use a uk bottle and a foreign bottle to hedge their bets...run out in france with the french bottle, change it there using the UK bottle until the change is convenient....and vice versa here...

however, even this sensible approach means you are tied into the uk bottled market which loves, so much, to take your hard earned....

i guess you dont use much has, otherwise, being a traveller to the continent, you might have considered a refillable. you could put your £12.50 towards one.....

Yes, I agree with BB Doc. The purchase of a refillable is money well spent! I can't imagine going back to the gentle clutches of Calor! You can buy the adaptor for the French market so best of both worlds- just change the terminal and you always have your refillable cylinder- Safefill does a 10.3 kg one!

The time has arrived Safefill about to be purchased, Hoping the large one will fit in gas locker, we collect MH next week after some warranty work and will be calling at local caravan shop who have all three sizes in stock and if we can get it in the large
one is our weapon of choice.

The empty Calorlite is currently on eBay aNd will go some way to paying for the Safefill bottle.....goodbye and good riddance Calor

Good decision Hugh! You'll love it! SAFEFILL- your safeguard against ripoff gas prices! Technology moves on- time for all old steel cylinders to be returned to the smelting works and turned into something useful!!

Although we have the large Safefill 10kg bottle, why is it that when you are on a site miles from the nearest refill station, you seem to use twice as much gas as normal?

I an toying with the idea of buying a second 5kg bottle as a backup just in case as sometimes not always convenient to top up before a long trip.

always good to have a fallback position in most things....

although we have a refillable system, i will be taking a Spanish adaptor next time to Spain so as to make use of local (cheap bottled) gas, should a filling station not be convenient...

I don't know why everybody doesn't use Safefill. I have refilled mine 3 times in under a year  so it's now paid for itself. £75 for a bottle seems like a lot. But 3 refills for £6 somthing. Loads cheaper. But I cook & use the heating. And in hot weather
the fridge is far more efficient on gas. Just spent a week in a field without hookup. So hot water as well. Half a cylinder gone. About £3.50. And people said it would never pay for itself.

And your 'field' costs so much less too don't forget! I have found some fabulous 'fields' since going non EHU - I would never go back to the dependency on EHU. Safefill have struggled to establish themselves in a market place ruled by a cartel but with persistence
and the support of the public they are beginning to make headway! Yes, I would be on Safefill even if the cost savings were less just to deny Calor and Flo their ripoff prices. All the old steel cylinders should be made into plough shears!!

I now have one of each size and I find that the flexibility of the system is brilliant. However, I am not suggesting that it's sensible to go out and buy 3 Safefill cylinders- one of each size. ( I was fortunate in gaining the small one- a present!) however,
the large one 10.3 Kg and the small 5Kg is worth a thought?

Write your comments here...Problem is for refillable gas there are very few pertol stations that sell gas.  BP are dropping out of the market and the rest are few and far between.

I have said before and I say again- if we want cheaper gas - much cheaper gas- then it's up to us, the little guy. By sheer weight of numbers of people calling to fill Safefill cylinders garages will, one by one realise that they can't hold the flood back
any longer and won't want to! They want to sell gas!! Well, with over a million caravanners- that's just caravanners- do we really think that filling won't become easier in the future? No- who in their right mind doesn't want to sell lots of what they sell??
Keep buying Safefill cylinders folks and do yourself a favour and everyone else who has been ripped off on exchange cylinder for years!! The future is here!!

I really hope your are right Merve but I suspect that it is not really commercially viable and will therefore just not happen.

I would be surprised if you were right DD. Over a million caravanners now and growing? Tenters, boaters etc? This to me sounds like the life saving move the retailers have been waiting for- they just need convincing that it is!! The more refillable cylinders there are about, the more the pressure grows for these garages and outlets to fill them - after all, who turns good business away? Just filled my 10.3 kg SAFEFILL- £12.50- I can live with that!

Many caravanners use ehu exclusively and therefore very little gas. I am away for a third of the year and use about 6kg of gas. Therefore I am happy to pay £16 for 3.9kg
