How much do you pay for your gas ?

Just cost me £32 for 2.75 kg of butane. A camping gaz 907 is the only thing that fits in my van but to make matters worse I gave them back 0.75 kg because I needed a full bottle  for Silverstone .l don't use much gas and mostly rely on a solar panel but
CampingGaz make Dick Turpin look like a benevolent gentleman. Anyone with a campervan got a better solution ?

I am not so familiar with your set up - but that is highway robbery!  My feeling is that if you got a Safefill small cylinder and had it free standing (maybe outside the van) when parked up - you could solve the problem.  Although I must admit I am not sure
about the fitments you would need.  Isn't Camping Gaz Butane?  I am sure there is a way round your expensive problem!

ok its four times the price but Gaslow do a 907 refillable at £130.

the refills would then be peanuts....50p a ltr tops....

think of it as an investment....ypu could sell it on ebay at anytime and get most of ypur money back, in the meantime no rip off gaz prices...

Gaslow is tempting but it would take 5 years to break even and at my age I am reluctant to buy green bananas.

    Please note

For safety reasons gas cylinders supplying gas to the caravan should not be used from a cylinder outside of the gas locker when on site, (static caravans have there own regulations)

    kind regards, Ken

907 refill 16.60 euro in Spain. Why is it more than twice the cost in UK?

appreciate that Bob, hovever for those buying tiny quantities in tiny cylinders, you are being charged top dollar for your gas as opposed to those who get it in its cheapes form from a pump.

some might only have small capacity but use a fair bit and the investment in a refillable offsets the regular 'pain' of a £25 refill...

some, like you, dont use much gas, but still get a shock every time they get charged the eye watering price.....its at this time they are feeling like there 'must be a better way', hence your post....

as i said, it won't take you five years to break even as, at the end of 5 yrs, youll have a £75+ asset to sell.....so, the system will have only 'cost' you around £55...

either way, its a case of looking at some sort of change or bear the brunt of an ever increasing price for Campingaz, im afraid.

ps....i like green bananas, but once theyre gone, theyre gone....you can use them for five years and then sell them back to so eone for half their original valueWink

The only risk from an external cylinder is of it toppling over, something which I have never seen or heard of happening in more than 35 years caravanning. There is a ruling on CC sites for seasonal pitches but otherwise it is acceptable.

At home I have the very large and tall cylinder - that could fall over quite easily but you wouldn't want to move around with that one.  I have occasionally seen the mid size calor outside caravans - and they look safe enough even if against the rules.
NOT that I would take a risk with gas myself.  My large Safefill fits in the locker and is strapped in.

Good Lord Bob what are you doing??? Any chance of a modification to accommodate a larger cylinder? £32 for 2.5kg? Ah, now I remember why I got rid of Gaz completely - robbing s**s. It makes it worse as you say because you gave them some back which a quick
calc takes it over £40! WOW! Cheaper gas is here for the caravanner and motorhomer thanks to the work of Safefill, Gaslow etc. I'm not you mate but if I were I would be looking elsewhere and cutting costs and not just by a little bit!

No chance of a modification to get a bigger bottle in, I'd have to sacrifice beer storage space..To put it into perspective I only pay about 30 quid a year for gas and everything else runs off the solar panel so it's costing peanuts but it still irks me
to know I'm being shafted by Gaz

    £40.50 for 2 x Calor propane 6kg bottles

approx £11 to fill (from empty) my 11kg (22 ltr) gaslow.....

so pumped gas currently around a quarter of the cheapWink calor example above.

edit: and a third of Crusader's Flogas example.

...and in percentage terms, its even cheaper the smaller your bottles, as Bob has found out.

many threads around cheap gas on CT, so more info there, just some facts for those....who think they are being ripped off.

its true, for those who use tiny amounts of gas, refillables will take years to pay back.....but its more than about the capital outlay and more about the convenience and not being tied to (and ripped off by) suppliers that charge you a shedload for having the gas pre packaged in a bottle, especially when, like Bob, youre only buying a few ltr.

he was charged £32 for the approx 5 ltr bottle, around £6 per ltr!!!..

..use your own bottle and you only pay for the gas...around £2.50 for Bob to refill at the pump at 50p per ltr...

...1/12th of the cost..........and you can always sell the kit (for a good price) at any time...

BB one thing to remember though is availability of lpg at the pump. We were in Cornwall last weekand found it very hard to locate a garage with a pump even in Plymouth but most stocked bottles so you do need a bit of forward planning and be prepared to detour
if you use a refillable system, plus with BP coming out of the market it will only get harder so I  don't think it's fair to say refillable is the only answer. Of course on the other side of the water it may be easier and more pumps available!

    Michael, youre absolutely right...

when in spain, we could use a local bottle as back up...

..this 'approach' can also be used by anyone in the uk with a two-bottle locker, filling up when able but having the 2nd bottle if required....

Write your comments here... Doesn't really work in a campervan so I guess we just grin and bear it when we need to refill. At least I know that when I turn up in some remote village in Far Far Away the local ironmonger will have
a Gaz refill lurking somewhere in his shed.

In Spain last week on a campsite near Valencia €18 for a Gaz exchange bottle. It had a  proper seal, I think that sometimes they not properly refilled.

Couldnt put it better! It's more than just about cost. To be untied from a dictator and excessive rip off prices is more valuable to me than any worry about  the outlay for a safefill or gas low system. Guess what I voted last week!!!  To be able to fill
up and know that I have freed myself from over charging for a cylinder that they have charged another 100+ people for. That alone is worth the outlay! Long live people power!

I could get it 2-3 quid cheaper if I drive 10 miles to Go Outdoors, but why bother?
