Three's 3-2-1 PAYG SIM might suit. 3p a minute, 2p a text, 1p a MB cover pretty much all of Europe.

A 'Three' 12GB/12month PAYG data SIM is the best I've found for use in 'feel-at-home' locations. Currently £30 direct from 'Three'. (The 3-2-1 tarrif won't work  in a mifi or for tethering abroad).

Because of the 2 month limitation when abroad, you might need a couple of SIMs. (12 month doesn't start until activated).

(3GB/3month data Sims also available, but not such good value at around £12 on ebay).

It comes into play if you use the SIM for 2 complete months in any 12 in a feel-at-home country.  However this (should) reset if you use the SIM in a non feel-at-home (not necessarily UK).  Some people claim that as long as you do not use it for a couple of days each month that's OK, but I wouldn't trust that claim until I had tested it.

It's all a bit messy, and you can find varying info in different places on 'Three's site.  To quote them  "feel-at-home is intended for short holiday or business trips .....not for long term use abroad".    Hence sugggestion of multiple SIMs Innocent.

Can you help me with this. Am I right that the SIM has to be activated before you leave the UK to take advantage of the Feel at Home? Does it come in micro sim size so I could put it in my phone and use that as a WiFi point? ( Margaret has a phone so its not as though we would be without a phone whilst using it for data).

    Thanks

In theory you do not have to activate the sim in the UK but if there is an issue with the sim then it would be easier to sort out in the UK. You will lose a couple of days out of 365 but could save a fortune in phone calls and leave with peace of mind.

The sim comes in a push out so canbe used as any of the three different sizes with ease. No reason that I can think of that you cannot use the phone as a wifi point.

Thanks Camdoon, seems to make sense. On another issue I notice that the offer mentioned by Vic above that Three say it can't be used to thether your mobile phone to use it as a mobile hot spot. So how do you get round that. Surely its no different from using
it in a MiFi device. Which even way you cut it you are using the same data!!!

Just out of interest why are you using Bluetooth to connect the two? Are you not able to set the phone as a portable WiFi hotspot? Or do you use Bluetooth to overcome the tethering restrictions?

I am with Virgin and just discovered they are are still doing their Travel Passes for EU countries and a 250MB one costs £5 (down from £20 last year) and lasts 30 days. Its often enough to do a bit of intrent banking and a bit of forum surfing for a few days if there is no WiFi available. You can also get 50MB for £1.50 which should be enough to keep the Smart phone going for a while in normal mode.

Based on my previous experience of using the Virgin Travel Passes it seems a reasonably uncomplicated way for me on the relatively rare ocassions there is no site WiFi. If you use a lot of Aires then I can see the benefit of needing  a greater data allowance.
In a couple of weeks time we are off on a two month trip and its the first time in three years we have been away for so long so it will be interesting to see how we manage internet wise.

It used to be easy in France - the Joe network (basically resellers) had very good PAYG data offers and accepted UK bank accounts.  Unfortunately, last year they were bought out by Virgin France, who only accept French accounts.

Last year we found the best data only PAYG in France was La Carte by SFR - but you did need to go into one of their shops (and queue for ages!) to pay by UK cards.  I think they're still €10/1 Gb/10 days or €35/4 Gb/28 days.

This year though we're travelling through France and Spain to get to Portugal, and have got a 3 payg sim (12 months validity) hoping to use their Feel At Home cover in France and Spain.

Another vote for "3". There are also no roaming charges in many of the EEC countries.

The best I have found so far is Three (3) with their 12gb SIM valid for 12 months, or their 3gb offer valid for 3 months; about £27 and £11 respectively.  In either case you can use their "feel at home" offering for 2 months in many EU countries but not
Germany which is really annoying.  I think the 3 month card will cover our next visit to France.

just checked the 3 website and the 3gb offer valid for 3 months is showing at £16.  Am I missing something here?
