Is Red Pennant worth it?

It varies each year and it's wise to check but yes, it probably is worth the membership for access to the insurance. The cover is similar. I am sure you remember Europ Assistance, that's who the C&CC use ( now called Arval I think) Excellent.
We didn't go overseas this year so I am unable to give you actual figures but I am sure I won't be the only person that gets quotes from both who might be able to oblige.

Im off abroad in the van. As its already costuing me an arm and a leg, I need to ask - is Red Pennant insurance worth it or can I get cheaper?

We find that CCC has always offered an equivalent level of cover for a cheaper price. Comments from members who have needed to use the service seem to show the same high level of satisfaction as fom CC members who have used RP.
Is it cheap enougt to justify another membership for those of us who have no other use for it?

Probably. Why don't you see if you can check the price? (I'm not sure if it is in the Members Only section of the website.)
We find that we gain so much by being in both clubs and probably save more than the cost of membership through various savings. For instance, consistently over 15 years of campervan/motorhome ownership the CCC has provided the best value insurance for our specific needs whereas the CC Green Flag has produced the best value UK breakdown cover for our needs. These savings taken with others eg 10% extra discount at GoOutdoors through CCC (20% recently for a brief period) along with an annual visit in July/August to a CCC Temporary Holiday Site in Whitby for £11.50 per night including showers and loos mean that, for us, CCC membership would be worthwhile even if we never used a Club site.
