Caravan Insurance "New for Old" query
my 2012 Swift Challenger Sport caravan has been insured on a "new for old" basis since new. Swift Caravan Group have now dropped this range for 2016 so as my insurance renewal is due and had intended to renew it for "new for old" again for another year.
Has anyone encountered this for your model of caravan. I could go up to a Swift Challenger 530 which for 2016 has a lesser MRO than the Challenger SE was but still slightly too heavy for comfort. A Sprite is a lesser quality range and doesn't do a layout of
the 524SR Sport...I am contacting C.C.Insurance dept tomorrow for their suggestions.

If you contact the Club, they will tell you what the equivalent van is. They were helpful on the occasions we have had the same problem.

Write your comments here...Yes, I know that they can offer alternative caravans where the issue of of redundant models arise but I presume if I were to go for the Swift Challenger 530 which is in MRO terms a bit more, and about £900 more expensive, I presume
I have to agree to that sum but it's annoying that my Sport's 2015 new price would only have gone up in value for a new one by about £200 for 2016 if it was still manufactured for this year.0 -
I am afraid this happens all the time, our caravan now has a layout that no one makes. I just say what I think is the nearest equivalent. If you cannot get close with a Swift you could use a similar model from another manufacturer citing the weight problem
of the Challenger and the lower spec of the Sprite for rejecting them.Frankly there is nothing any insurer can do about the problem and all that can be done is try and agree what any replacement should be and hope that does not get withdrawn.

Why cannot a "new for old" be based on price with it index linked to RPI or some such rather than a model type which is bound, over the passage of time, to become obsolete/discontinued.
I don't know why a "protected defined value" option cannot be offered for S/H vans in addition to market value.

Caravan Club Insurance section advises that in arriving at the current cost of a new caravan in the event of lost, stolen, written off on a caravan range that's no longer manufactured, is the new price of the caravan before production ceased and 3% added on.....this
is then the amount they base your premium on for another years cover of your existing outfit on a new for old basis, ...To this sum of course you still have to add yor valuation for "associated equipment" and then separately your valuation for"personal effects".....They
also advise that if none of the alternative caravans offered to you suits you, then you have the right to ask the Club for a payout of your claim in cash.0 -

Our last caravan was from Avondale and each year at renewal they quoted the model they felt was the equivalent and based the policy on that. The idea of adding 3% a year is ludicrous and would never get past the ombudsman
if a dispute arose. If the policy says replacement as new then that is what they are obliged to do or pay the cash to purchase this.0 -
The Caravan Club. So my caravan is now insured by adding 3% onto the price of my caravans new price of a 2015 model in 2015. Your duty is to advise your insurer of the replacement value of your caravan at renewal if you want new for old cover for the next
year.0
