Site closing
I know sites need maintenance done but why do lots of sites need to close for five months , north of Edinburgh it's hard to find sites open after the end of October , with so many vans on the road now could they not shorten their closed period or is there
another reason they close for so long , where does everyone go in the closed season , certainly not a huge choice of club sites one up this way most of the winter

Not many CC sites open North of Perth, Stonehaven and Culloden are until the New Year. If you look on UKCampsites and do a filter for open all year sites you will find quite a few more that are open. North Ledaig is posted by the CC as closed but their own
website says open, so I phoned them and they confirm they are open but the site is reduced to 1 toilet block and the reception to only mornings.where does everyone go in the closed season
I'm afraid the answer to that is usually Spain, not this year though. We have spent some of the off season in the South of England and had good weather but it is a long way to go on the off chance. Don't know what you like to do but places like York are
always good for a winter break.0 -

Stonehaven seems to be always fully booked , we both work full time so it's mainly weekends we have free but yeah not much choice around perthshire or aberdeenshire open after October that we can escape to with ease on a Friday afternoon

Just returned from Stonehaven yesterday. We were there for a week and there were spaces over the weekend. Note there is only 1 pitch non-awning so we just booked an awning pitch near the toilet block and had a good time there.

A mere 600 miles each way for me, Tammy.

No problem at all

I guess for the site in Scotland a lot will be to do with the expected weather in winter, wind, snow etc.
.Well it shouldn't be a problem, there are plenty of ski resorts so the roads are usually kept clear. It is only for a very brief spell that the snow gates get closed usually while it is actually snowing. Yorkshire/Derbyshire and Cumbria can sometimes have
much worse weather than Scotland but folk don't always see it like that I'm afraid.0 -
Yes, quite. A lot of people have some very strange ideas about what it is like in Scotland!
A colleague who worked in our London office once remarked that he didn't know how I could bear to live in Glasgow, as he reckoned not only did it rain all the time, and was polluted, but we had no theatres or opportunities to go to the opera or the ballet!

Good job there is no pollution in London then

Surely it's to do with the number of caravanners that use them in the winter. We only caravan in British Summer Time. We have tried it in the winter but no thanks and as for spending Christmas away I think you are all bonkers.
We go away in the winter but in hotels or cottages. We much prefer Christmas and New Year, at home, in more spacious surroundings with family and friends.
I much admire all those that do but it's not for us.

Should there be a smiley at the end of that sentence, RRM?
What's "bonkers" about spending Xmas in your caravan or MH? We've done it a few times and thoroughly enjoyed cooking Xmas dinner in the van, going for a really nice walk before cooking dinner, as well as the atmosphere on site.
I fully accept it isn't for everyone, as it's not everybody's cup of tea, but I don't think we're bonkers.
As they say: don't knock it until you've tried it

We go to the commercials.once you have experienced the quality, pricing etc, you tend to stay with the commercials as they are better than the CC.
Write your comments here...Not in my experience, and they want to charge extra for just about everything, one in Cornwall wanted 2 pounds a night for a dog.....for which they provided no facilities at all.Give me the Club every time.

So the £2 charge serves its intended purpose of discouragement?

Gross overgeneralization there! Sure there are lots of new commercial sites better than old CC ones. And there are commercial sites offering better special deals out of season than the CC.
But there are also a lot of rubbish commercials out there, charging far more than CC sites for far worse facilities.
Not totally sure what it's got to do with sites being closed though?

6.50 euros a night per dog would ensure i would never(ever) use it. On principle. Prefer Club sites.even Affiliated sites some i find not so good. Given the choice between North Ledaig and Bunree, give me Bunree every time, and thats onto the same loch in the same area. Which reminds me, didnt Bunree used to be open over Christmas ? Havnt stayed there over Christmas, but have considered it in the past, but notice it has closed for the Winter now ? Any one know why ?

Well at the moment I can assure you there are lots of vanners out there, we live fairly close to the A9. I don't think there has been a day that we haven't seen 3 or 4 caravans/motorhomes going up and down the A9 when we have been going into Perth. This
morning there was 3 M/H's parked up at the Aldi on the Inveralmond roundabout, getting their shopping no doubt before heading North. We've not yet spent Christmas in the van but we have spent New Year up at Stonehaven, they have a Fireballs festival parade and fireworks at Midnight, the place was packed, music playing all along the road out to the Harbour where its held, everyone in good
spirits. Yes it was cold but you can wrap up for it, have a wee dram on the journey and a nice hot chocolate (laced with rum) on your return around 01.30. The site was quiet no parties, no loud voices just folk returning to their vans. The next day a few vans
had open house as did the wardens. We had a lovely time and would do it again.0 -

Friends have just done the NC500 in their car and caravan. As so few sites were open they had to wild camp a couple of times. One was on a campsite that closes each year at the end of September, but leaves the gates open. The owners don't want to be tied
to the site in the off season. If the numbers using the site begin to make it worthwhile to employ someone to stay open they will consider it.0 -
for dogs in a designated area, they do provide showers and playground
On many sites one does not get that even for children . . !
