There used to be three sites at Ardgarten.  CC. C&CC and Forestry Commission.  Only the Forestry site remains as cabins only. The area used by both the clubs were supposed to become an upmarket hotel complex.

The upmarket place is there now - a huge building totally out of place with the local scenery.  However, the midgies will have revenge, especially on those at the FC log cabins who use their outdoor hot tubs!!

Enjoyed a weekend at Ilam Hall many years ago when there was a Caravan Club site there. Only small, but in an area with some excellent walking. The National Trust run a site in the same location now.

I wonder if my Ilam Club Site green plaque is worth hundreds of pounds?

We had quite a few weekends at Ilam Hall. Lovely area. Shame the CC are unable or unwilling to keep these gems going.

With regard to the CC's statement about timescale of opening and closure mentioned by Aspenshaw, isn't the Sites Manager and his dept. supposed to do forward planning? Do they really just wait until a lease runs out and then start looking for alternatives?
Does the fact that a lease runs out come as a surprise to them or that the landlord wants his land back? Do they not have discussions well beforehand?

JVB mentioned that he was sure it was "on their to do list". How long must members in Essex wait for a site? It must be a very big list.

...Essex has been looked at several times (what i have been advised when i asked) but nothing has been found  a suitable area/price

Joined at Gosford Gardens so that dates us. Stayed on the site in Pontins at Morecambe.  I will always remember the security man on the gate who asked if we had a  cabin booked having completely missed a 14 ft long caravan on the back of the car.

Yes ob1 i can remember Newmarket R/C site stayed on it , very pleasant memories of that site. This thread highlights many sites we have stayed at that are no longer on the network. The variety show at Pontins was a bit near the knuckle when we were there.

My new member card as just arrived , been a member 40 years, got to hang in for another 10 years then i think i get free membership , can any one confirm that, expect it will be changed before i reach that milestone.

a bit like the retirement age, it gets further away the nearer one gets to it!! I think that it's the other club that give free membership to those that have been a member 50yrs or more.

C&CC grant veteran membership at half price to members over 65(?) who have belonged for over 25 years. I've not heard of CC doing anything similar.

Only 12 yrs to go for us, and I'll be into my low 80's so plenty of free nights for us to come!!Wink

However will the offer still be on by then? I doubt it as the numbers of those who will be eligable for this is increasing every year.

44 years for me but due to the CC having reset my account when my online account broke I'm only down as a member of two years.

I think it unlikely that I'll be benefitting from this 'generous' offer
