I suppose its like any caravan sites the newer they are the more up to date the facilities are ,which tends to be reflected in the variation of prices some charge "low" prices off peak and very high prices in the shorter peak periods to make up the shortfall,

Back to OP and leaving card. Not sure that I would be that happy leaving any kind of card more than overnight. We usually roll up very last minute on most Club Sites, including AS and MUC, and it is standard practise to hand over a membership card and then
go back in in morning to pay and divulge your pitch choice number. At that point we get card returned, so no inconvenience.0 -
I think that is what I said above JVB, admittedly didn't use the word closed though. We usually arrive after office is closed on most sites. Like to make the most of our day.

What happens on CC owned/managed/operated sites when a non-member is given a barrier key? Is that perhaps where the £10 "discount" that members recieve comes from?

At that point we get card returned, so no inconvenience. We have done the same if we have arrived late at a campsite as the reception computers are closed. However the situation mentioned by the OP is where a membership card is held as security in lieu of a deposit for the barrier key. Morris Leisure, no doubt,
think they a doing Club members a favour by not taking a cash deposit which is the obvious alternative. Also not a million miles away from and ACSI site abroad keeping your card until you have paid. If people are not happy leaving a membership card they could
always offer a cash deposit instead.David

Suppose it depends what is on the card, and any security issues. CC cards appear very basic, so I wouldn't worry. We are used to leaving cash deposits for things like keys and damage to cottages. We use our cards a lot with Great Days Out offers, and have
to holiday part solo at moment, so something to ponder on if we use a Morris Leisure site.0 -
We stayed at the Ludlow site the first year it was open. Same operator, same procedure with the CC membership card, as I recall. The site was excellent quality for pitches & facilities, but they do allocate pitches (unless they only allocate serviced pitches,
which is what we had).0 -
I think this is a practice only made by Stanmore, I don't recall Oxon retaining my Club card and certainly not come across this practice at other ASs. I have just had a night at Milestone, no deposit required at this lovely AS for the barrier key which you
do need to leave.Morris Leisure offer good off peak discounts which often work out cheaper than Club sites. Three nights for the price of two at the moment.

When we stayed at the Rutland AS they asked for a clubcard as deposit on gate key. It was fortunate that we did not leavce the site before the office reopened as I would have forgotten about my membership card and would have simply posted their key in the
leter box.Would prefer to leave a tenner as I would probably remember that!

If anyone desperately needed their membership card for a "Great Day Out" I cant see any of these sites being so infkexible as to retain it when for example a photocopy could be done. It might seem strange to anyone only ever using club sites for sites
to retain some form of ID but it is almost universal at sites where payment is taken on departure rather than arrivalOn the sites where I have been asked to leave my membership card I have paid on arrival

Wouldnt bother me as we have never used a CC card to get a discount, its another example of affiliated sites doing their own thing- they are basically just commercial sites that get free publicity through being on the CC website/book.
Write your comments here...And I get annoyed when REAL CC sites are closed, like Much Wenlock, and are told that an AS is a sufficient substitute....it is NOT. What we need are more genuine CC owned sites, spend some of OUR surplus on buying up leases
on leased sites, and dont even think of selling much loved sites like Broadway !!0 -
North Ledaig is an AS much favoured by a number of posters on here.
Write your comments here...Stayed on it once, MUCH prefer Bunree.
Not exactly comparable are they as they are seperated by distance. It may only be 30 mile but I rarely travel more than 30 miles each way on a day out and prefer to move every 5 days. I have used both and enjoy both

Could it be that Grimstead Towers find it easy to approach an established site and arrange a discount for members other than looking for viable sites to buy or land to build new sites.
I can see more AS sites joining the already too many in the sites book.

I totally agree that some AS sites are not to CC site standards, indeed they can be much better..... (that will have my card marked!). However to the OP I too would have declined their request, do they refer to the club card deposit on their website? If
they do then probably not much one can do, if not i suggest they are taking liberties.0 -
I am happy to use most AS sites. They do fill gaps in parts of the CC network for me. However would not use Market Rasen site again. Did not like the lack of control of regular weekend users over their grandchildren for one thing nor the wardens' laissez
faire attitude.0 -
We were asked for our membership card in France last week, lieu of the deposit for the barrier key- I don't think the offers are much use to them over there!
Also, what is the point of the 'affiliated sites'? I booked one this morning and when I mentioned my membership, she said it didn't make any difference to the booking costs. So why are they on the caravan club site list? Surely, we should get a discount.....?

There are commercial sites which are affiliated on the CC sites books which have better locations and scenery than CC sites.
I immediately think of Braemar ( commercial ) and Markinch ( CC )
No comparison really. Braemar is has always been one of my favourite sites.

We have used/visited around 11 AS sites, and never had a problem or issues with any of them. In fact our original Club membership was taken out at one over 30 years ago, so they are nothing new to being part of the Club's network of sites. I think misunderstanding
arise when members book and roll up at one expecting things like facilities, rules and staff to be exactly the same as on Club owned sites. Both the handbook and the AS website page make it clear that this isn't the case. Same with MUC sites, I suspect a few
members have no idea what and how these form part of the site network. With the loss of Much Wenlock and Bromyard Downs next year, the Morris Leisure owned AS sites are filling a geographical black hole for the Club. But things like prices, rules, staffing are different.
It perhaps needs a clearer indication in the handbook especially that these site are different.

I agree about Braemar but it was once a club site. I rather think the owners saw how well it was doing though and that is why they took it back. This has happened on a few of late and is looking like a trend beginning to start.

Two questions for head office.
1 --- Do commercial sites pay money to the CC to be quoted as an AS on the CC's handbook.
2 ----- If thats the case how much do they pay our club per annum
Its our club , it is owned by the membership, we are entitled to be able to access this information.

I am pretty sure they do pay a fee as the site book/website is considered advertising. Many years ago I was talking to the owner of a then AS site who decided to leave the AS system when there was a hike in fees. As to being told how much that is I would
suggest almost impossible as its commercially sensitive information. Even if the Club were willing (most unlikely) the campsites concerned certainly not be happy with the information to be public.David
