I can see a motor caravan being a good idea for travel in the winter months. One would not need to step outside at all. Ice Station Zebra anyone?

In fairness,on trunk roads in Scotland we see many more caravans than motorhomes during the good summer time weather, probably to the ratio of 2/1.
Conversely, as said previously, we notice the situation on trunk roads is in the region of 2/1 in favour of Motorhomes outwith the summer months.
So it really depends on your holiday times and location choices.

We caravan all year and love it. We are seriously thinking about getting a van conversion to tow with and get a bit of the best of both worlds so to speak. A nice 1 nighter in a van would be easier than setting everything up in the caravan.
Is this a good idea??

Just got back from a week (in shorts and t-shirts) in the Lake District and, after a week at home, will be off again next weekend. Maybe more after that who knows.

For many years now as well as spending many weeks in the caravan touring in all areas of the UK and the continent.
We always rented cottages during early Spring before the caravan season starts and at the end of the season when sites have closed down.
In 3 weeks time we are holidaying in a cottage within a few meters from the shore of a particularly scenic sea loch on the most beautiful north west of Scotland . Really looking forward to the holiday.
At those times of the year we always notice that there are many more motorhomes travelling on trunk roads than caravans.
This might not be the case further south in the UK where they dont have any winter weather.

Now that's strange, K, as we are at present away in Scotland and there's been more caravans than M/H on the sites we've been on up to now. However it may well be different as we head into October. I'll keep you updated.

We're in Scotland, too, Nellie. Arrived at Strathclyde country park CC site early afternoon. No, I haven't been round with my clipboard, but I'd say the site is 75% full, nearly all caravans, hardly a motorhome in sight.

I think the difference might be that K is seeing MHs on the road whereas Nellie and Pliers are noting the numbers on site. Many of the MHs on the roads might be going shopping or sight seeing before returning to site. Likewise, a number of solo cars seen on the road might be doing exactly the same thing but have left their caravans on site. Cvans are generally only out on the road going to and from sites, not so with MHs. Therefore, counting units on the road is not comparing like with like.

But Instead of going to an urban transit site in the industrial belt of Scotland (S/P) -- Go to one of the many scenic locations further north . I'm sure you will enjoy the experience.

We're here for the football, K, Celltic's home match on Wednesday night, but decided to stay for longer and have a look at the area. Well impressed so far! Absolutely loved the Kelpies.

Just got back from a west country trip - some pleasure and some family stuff. Looking forward to the next trip - possibly northwards to somewhere to see some Northern Lights - ideas anyone? Kielder and Scotland spring to mind - I must do some research.

Write your comments here...Enjoy the match Pliers. Glad you like the central belt of Scotland. But even although I live in that area, its not a patch on the North West of Scotland.
Its further north that we find many more motorhomes than caravans being used as winter commences.

Write your comments here...Of course you would for two reasons. 1---We are still in the extended summer/ autumn season and its a couple of months to go till we approach.winter.
2 Garlieston (a site ive used many times) is a very nice site but is not in the most remote or scenic part of Scotland and is very easy to reach being so close to the Border. So I would expect to see many more caravans there at this time of year.

Thanks for the good wishes, but we're not on the site, K, just called into the village for a look around. We much rather use CL's, like one we're on at present, at less than 2/3rds the cost of the club site. I can't really see why the rave reviews for the site either. OK, it looks out over a bay but the views arn't that special IMO.
