A30 to Cornwall

Does anyone know if there are any roadworks or delays on the A30 from Exeter to Newquay as i am going there next week.

    Yes I think the widening exercise just before Bodmin is ongoing until next year.

    Don't envy you that journey! Try and avoid weekend if you can, other than that I would suggest you pack sandwiches, a flask and a porta potti! It was bad before the roadworks, a nightmare during!

    Well, we went through there last September (when there were similar dire warnings) and had no delays at all.

    It was about 9:30am, if that makes a difference.

    Same coming back at end of September.

    I can assure you it's been horrendous at times, Ian, and 9.30 would make a difference. 

    This time next year it'll all be over and the bottleneck will have moved elsewhere.Smile

    We've come down twice in the last few weeks, Brian, both midweek, once at around 8am but last time about 4pm. The stretch of roadworks around Temple (about 4 miles) has a reduced 40 mph limit but the traffic was moving smoothly both times. Happy

    (Eastbound there are 2 lanes open but still with the 40mph limit)

    Be aware too that two more caravans speeding down the hills on the A30 near Okehampton last week - one in one direction and one in the other - went into severe snaking, turned over,  and were completely wrecked.

    Highgate Hill at Fraddon is another favourite roll over spot. Too fast down the hill and the bend at the bottom catches them out.

    Bit too fast, downhill, not just loaded as well as it might be, a bend and a gust of wind.Surprised

    The hills near Okehampton mentioned by ET are similar with bends at the bottom. It's so easy to use too high a gear and go too fast.

    Thanks for the replies I have driven this road lots of times and know the hills very well. Will be leaving on the Monday and will be in Exeter and joining the A30 around 10am. Hoping to get to the site around 1pm. What i don't like is long tailbacks stop
    start for miles. Restricted speed limits are ok 40mph is only a little bit slower then 50mph.

    The worst of the holiday traffic will be over with by Monday Brian, so with any luck you'll be OK and only delayed by a matter of minutes. We'll be heading in the opposite direction in the afternoon, so I hope they still have two lanes open in that direction! Happy

    Sorry, the two lanes eastbound will reduce back to one lane on Sunday 4 September 2016, and from then till 11 September that stretch of the A30 through the roadworks is closed entirely overnight, with a long diversion via Wadebridge and Camelford.

    I wasn't aware of that, ET. It'll make life difficult for anyone travelling overnight. I think we'll stick to the A38 for the time being.

    Write your comments here...it's only easy to go too fast there if you ignore all the signs telling towing vehicles to slow Down!  I did the route yesterday and was warned ! CoolInnocent

    Seriously though they are horrid and I can see people wanting to get the journey over etc etc.  I am definitely in fear of losing my caravan!  Which I nearly did yesterday when on M5 I was starting an overtake and another car pulling in from the fast lane........Surprised Just
    saw him out of the corner of my eye behind and I know my indicators were working.  His were not!

    We have used the A30 in Cornwall fairly frequently this year and never had to stop due to the road widening operation. As stated in an earlier post, the speed limit is 40 mpg but as a caravanner how are only losing 20 mph and not for too long either. A year
    ago long delays were frequent. I know that it sometimes can't be avoided, but weekends are extra busy.

    WE came through there 2 weeks ago with no hold ups at all, but saying that it was at 11.30pm on a Friday.

    At least the peak season is just about over then there will be those taking advantage of shoulder seasons rates before the cooler weather and it really quietens down. Low season is the best time to visit Cornwall.
