My comments were in relation to whether someone can tackle awnings in difficult weather conditions, many at Dunnet choose not to use one, the soil is also quite sandy as the site is on the edge of sand dunes. the wind can blow in all directions across the Pentland Firth. I think people are usually quite helpful on sites but you can't always rely on others and self reliance is important.

The year in France I helped two Brits with electrical problems and earned a bottle of beer and a ride into town. With the second one the proprietor sent him down to see me - maybe time to move on we thought! Oh well, it's nice to be able to help people out
so we really didn't mind.0 -
When we encounted very high winds at Middlesbourgh site many years ago, we decided to take the awning down . Within seconds we had 3 couples offering us help, we gladly accepted their help and afterwards we all had a good laugh while having a well earned
drink. Several years later and we were on Anglesey when the wind got up again, down came the awning with help this time from 2 couples, who we then helped take down theirs. Good job we did quite a few had damage from awnings left up. We have always found folk
to be very helpful and willing on sites be it here or abroad.0 -

We would normally take the awning down the day before if we know rain or wind is forecast, unfortunately due to having no radio reception or internet connection we had no wind warning.
We use the awning as we have a dog and its useful for drying/cleaning him before he goes inside. If the weather is not suitable on arrival then we don't use it, however when we arrived at Dunnet Bay it was a glorious sunny windfree day.
we would never be offended if anyone offered any help and yes we would do the same.
We do realise that it is our awning and therefore our responsibility to get it down in all weathers, I was making an observation that we have been told on numerous occasions that camping is like one big family and everyone helps everyone else, just not in our case.

I was sorry the OP was criticised, but thought that the attitude she found from people on that Club site was pretty typical. Leaving aside the summer season with families around I never found much camaraderie on a Club site - no communal barbecues, no getting
together for big screen TV, no all-age boules competitions, no groups sharing a few drinks and conversation together - just a bunch of rather insular, elderly people.keeping themselves to themselves. What the OP found didn't surprise me at all.0 -

Years ago we were trying to put up a new awning when he chap from two caravans down offered to help. We politely told him that it was fine and we would get there eventually as there was no rush. He replied, 'please let me help, I have just had an almighty
row with her indoors and need to be out of the van for a while'. We let him help.0 -
At Dunnet, in fierce winds, I doubt that anyone would be out and about having a party!
If the wind does not blow your awning away then the jet wash from the Tornado GR4 fighter bombers approaching the bombing ranges out at sea will do the job

Same here - any site that 'offered' those would be off my list I am afraid. Happy to chat at the tap, happy to help anyone but communal anything, let alone TV - no thanks.

As discussed many times on numerous threads we all caravan for our own individual reasons as well as those benefits we find in common. However to criticise members for being insular or unfriendly is simply just as rude as the behaviour which is being complained
of. I do not ignore other campers and agree a good morning or nice weather comment doesn't hurt And neither does the offer or acceptance of
useful help go amiss. However we are on holiday to enjoy ourselves in our way and with the job I have by the time holiday comes around I simply am not in the mood for enforced jolity, and communal anything has me running for
the exit as fast as possible.0 -
We go away for a relaxing break not as in some peoples minds a "party"site, it's bad enough at times when down wind of other noises ,but as for helping our fellow "campers" I find it getting less and less with the "younger" members who use sites they will rather "look on"

I don't find younger members less helpful / friendly than others at all. Bit surprised to read this to be honest.
Mind you I don't go around the campsite with a face looking like its chewing a wasp.
Not aimed at anyone by the way, just making the point most behaviour is reflective. In plain english, you get back what you give out.

Yesterday an even older couple than us arrived, and got into a real tangle trying to get on their pitch, after unhooking car found MM not working, we and neighbours and warden went to assist,a much younger man came over ,not to help, but to complain to the warden that they needed to move as they could not get WiFi on their pitch
