Torpoint Ferry
When I was working (delivery driver), I frequently crossed the river Tamar from Plymouth to Torpoint. I cannot remember seeing caravans on the ferry. Has anybody used the ferry with the caravan in tow?

Yes. I was alongside a double decker bus.

Write your comments here...Thanks for the reply Euro. I don't know the limit of vehicle size on the ferry. I have seen bus's on there. The ferry could be a useful shortcut in future.

There's an 18 tonne limit. You and I are both OK The prices are exactly the same as the Tamar Bridge - free going into Cornwall, but charged going out. Locals like me have a Tag and go for half price.

We used to use Torpoint frequently, mainly with a trailer, but we think once or twice with caravan as well. Do recall some bottom scrape if tide was out, due to angle of ramps! Long vans might have a bit of an issue.

Write your comments here...I must admit that botttom scrape is a concern that I would have with using the Torpoint ferry at low water spring tides. I think that a very slow cautious approach would be advisable when towing a caravan on to the ferry on low
tides.0 -
I'd stick with the Bridge, personally.
The toll for a car is £1.50 plus another £1.50 for a trailer/ caravan. MHs up to 3500kg are the same rate as a car. Tag holders go half price. Fees are charged, as has been said, only for leaving Cornwall.

Or go through Gunnislake/Callington?
Yorkshiremans preferred route (costs nowt)
Our route home via Tavistock and Dartmoor! Some of gradients and narrow bridges aren't for the faint hearted and heavily laden though! Miffed at being in MH this Summer, we usually do the straight on race after bridge to beat some of traffic! A no no in
MH! Back down in Jeep September!0 -
Oh TTDA, do you not know the Horsebridge crossing of the river Tamar - the Stoke Climsland to Tavistock road.

Write your comments here...TW, what is your reason for not using the ferry coming back into Cornwall? If I was heading directly home (West Cornwall) I too would use the bridge but if I intended using a CL say near Looe then I would consider the ferry - unless
you can advise me otherwise. Look forward to your reply as I have not taken the caravan on the ferry and need to know any downside to it.0 -
Hi, JD. The points against using the ferry are having to drive through parts of Plymouth rather than straight down the A38 dual carriageway, having to queue, coping with the ferry ramps, picking your way out of Torpoint. Each to their own but I find using
the Bridge and doubling back from Trerulefoot to be far simpler.0 -
Thanks for taking the time to reply TW. I must admit that driving through some parts of Plymouth does not appeal to me on reflection. I will consider the other points in slow time. Thank you.

No problem, JD. I used to live in Plymouth and remember the days before the Bridge was built.

Fully concur with Tinny's reasoning, Torpoint is nice if you aren't in a rush or towing, but Bridge is easier. We used Ferry to do a bit of ship and submarine spotting, back when we had a Navy! Hit gold one time, Ark Royal! Those were the days!

TTDA. Did my time on the Ark. Drank my last tot of rum on there (the last day of the tot). TW, I never saw the Tamar without the bridge. Were you tugging then? Bet Torpoint was busy.

Not quite. I was about 12 when it was built!

Sorry TW. I didn't think that one out very well. You might have had a toy caravan though!
