Fire - the reality

'minimum' regulations, surely?
id rather be on a remote village aire in France....on my own
..So would others just remember it is not all the sites Overthere that have "space" even less when families need to go
but like TTDA says earlier, one has the choice of doing 'busy' or 'quiet'....
..Sounds like over here

We were staying at Hillhead CC site in June and witnessed two caravans pitched totally the wrong side of the peg. The wardens must have seen this because they came by everyday after cleaning the washroom - but nothing was said!! I hope the wardens will now
enforce the ruling!0 -

enforce the ruling! As I keep saying, they avoid any conflict at all costs.
Maybe things will change now?

Not wanting to appear to crow, but surely this frightening occurance enforces the argument that quite a few of us have made, about CLs squeezing an extra two or three units on a five van site.....

Yep, it shows just how squeezed in they are if being a gnats wotsit from the peg can put you in violation of the hallowed CC Ltd rules.
...Planning reg rules /fire service recomendations
Not planning JVB I gave you the info a page back. In any event there is nothing to stop the licensee making the pitches bigger so that the user has more choice where to pitch without being too close to their neighbour, e.g. if the CC Ltd hard standings were separated by 6m wide grass verges it would be possible to pitch anywhere on the pitch.
...One one hand there are moans that there are not enough pitches, then some want more hardstandings, now its 6mtr grass strip, 3 grass pitches make two hardstands on sites ,a six mtr grass strip would mean mean about 4 grass pitches into two, and as a large ammount of sites were set up years ago when a large van was 15ft there is a limit to what can be achieved

Many moons ago vans were what.....2m or 2.1m, now 2.3m is common, some are even 2,45m.

Why do we need a discussion about spacing etc. The fact is there has been a detrimental effect in someone's life, thankfully no one hurt or worse, the system works to the benefit of all. To the people who had the fire or were effected by the fire and the
subsequent consequence you have my sympathy.1 -

enforce the ruling!...It would be interested to know what area it was ,as when we have been there it was only at w/ends that the site staff cleaned the loos ,it was "contracters" mon-fri and hedged hardstands near the toilets

Not sure the cause of the fire is relevant. What matters is that the spacing worked but the fact the units next to it were marked shows that a lower figure is not warranted.
I have not seen a warden ignore a serious breach and ladt year did see the wardens at Tredegar House make a motorhome with a very large awning move the lot when they pitched the wrong side of the peg.
Probably details of this loss should be sent to all wardens with instructions to enforce the rule and an article printed in the magazine.

Thank God for Caravan Club fire safety guidelines. Thanks to those guidelines only one motorhome was destroyed by fire early this morning. Two others were damaged by the heat, and a car was also damaged but thankfully no-one was hurt.
From when my wife woke me, just as it had started to when the fire brigade got here 10 minutes later the motorhome was already destroyed. They were leftwith nothing, not even clothes.
The next time someone moans about the spacing being too far apart might want to see what it looks like in the cold light of day, if not for that spacing people may have died, it went up that fast. I'll never visit a site that doesn't have adequate fire safety
spacing. That was damn right scary watching that. This happened on Broadway caravan site. All the wardens were out of bed in double quick time within seconds of the alarm being raised and dealt with it in a very professional manner.
Write your comments here...This was very scary as we were pitched in front of this motorhome on a lower level with a bank of trees that separated us.The noise of people shouting Fire and the popping of gas bottles and what I think may have been tyres bursting
was very frightening. We evacuated our van and moved my vehicle to safety until the fire was dealt with..Most people on site were out and watching but luckily no lives were taken but the loss to the couple was immense. The rule for pitching was very evident
and not only because of the fire spreading but for the intense heat.We could feel it and smell burning rubber even though we were on the lower tier of pitches. It was a very sad night and very upsetting for all on the site but the feeling for the motorhome
owners was intense. The wardens at Broadway were excellent and cared for the owners of the motorhome and did all they could to assist everyone involved. The fire service were very quick in attending and the fire was very quickly halted and minimized damage,
thankfully. to other vehicles. The pitch this morning looked very sad all charred and the wardens were taking care to cover what was left of the charred remains, So very very sad.....SG2 T0 -

Well let's just hope so. Perhaps one of the wardens that post on here can let us know if this happens.

Given the number of nights per year that CC sites are used it would be useful to know how many fires there are! my guess is very, very few. I also think the cause of this fire is critical information so the incident can be put in context. It appears to
me the CC rules work very effectively - it is impossible to illiminate all risk.0 -
i think if you look at caravan site fires over all across all type of sites there are very few. most of the ones i have seen have been on storages not on site

I see there's been a serious gas explosion in a terraced house in Manchester. Shouldn't houses be spaced six metres apart?

I guess that is tongue in cheek. You are dealing with a whole different set of risks and brick walls. I must say though that having seen two house fires that have gutted the place my preference would always be for detached.

I think it is best understood as the 3m is the fire break whilst the 6m gives room for you to get out and get more than 3m away. It also allows room for any (probably purile) fire fighting activity to take place.
