Haven Craig Tara
We are wanting to stay a couple of weeks in Ayrshire and mostly stay on CL sites, but they are a little limited in the area and a couple have no room. 'Craig Tara' a Haven site is doing a pitch with electric for £15 per night, and obviously all that comes with a complex such as this.
Has anyone experience of this site, or Haven sites as a touring base, cheers.

Cheers ET, perhaps because my dates are from the first week in September it is making a big difference, in fact they have discounted again and its coming out at around £14 per night now. Certainly comparable with a CL but I have never used a Haven site before.

We have seen around a couple of Haven Sites Dave, but never stayed. I would have a good look on UKcampsites, and Trip Advisor and take a look at some of the reviews (avoiding the rants and raves you sometimes get!)
Personally, I would look beyond the price and make sure things read and seem to be what suits you. You might drop lucky, but you want to avoid any surprises as well. Good Luck

One word - don't! I can elaborate if you'd like but that pretty much sums it up

I don't think we will be trying them, despite the great value out of season. They just don't appeal. To be fair though, on the noise issue CC sites are not immune. Particularly when they have a pub close to the entrance. Or on weekends, when groups meet
up and then wander back to their vans, well lubricated, late at night.0 -
The Bonga Wonga Showbar was as awful as you can imagine And people queue up to get in!
To be fair to Haven, we stayed at Haggerston Castle at Easter 2014 and had a great time. There's something about the Craig Tara that seems to attract the worst of the West of Scotland. As one of my friends put it, you need a football top and a neck tattoo to fit in!
I wouldn't usually be so down on a site as different peple like different things but it was woeful. Thank goodness for the farm park next door and the Burns museum down the road or we would have really struggled. Ayrshire has a lot to offer so don't let it put you off the area.
PS the Trip Advisor post I wrote at 3am as our neighbours attempted to get into their caravan is the most popular one I've written!

We were just talking about it and although Google mapping doesn't show the caravanning location, Bing aerial maps does. It looks as if it is an afterthought extension, out of the way and adjacent to a nearby rubbish tip near the entrance
As we are predominantly CL'ers where peace and tranquility mostly occurs, it could be a culture shock so have decided to spend our time at the CC Ayr site

Yes, it tucked up right at the front gate by the main road. Definitely only there because they couldn't squeeze any statics onto the space!

If you're National Trust members, be sure to check out the Burns Museum in Alloway and Culzean Castle

Marvellous WH! You have put my imaginings into words! I was trying to be diplomatic Dave, as I knew a few on here have used Haven sites. I am sure that perhaps out of season and with careful choice of location, it might be a consideration (although not a
personal one!) but I didn't think it would suit you!0 -
Tinny has mentioned a site in the Largs thread, South Whittlieburn Farm I think it is. Coming up as a small site, not a CL in UKcampsites. Got some good reviews. Could be a CL as well?

I saw Tinny's reply in that thread and took that one into consideration, just a little to far north from where we want to be, but thanks Have settled on the Ayr site, but gambling on short notice booking

No more to add on Craig Tara other than its a tip lol. We live 30 mins from Ayr so use the CC site often for weekend breaks its a decent site right in the town so very handy. We also use the Ranch in Maybole on a regular basis and I can fully reccomend it
the site is kept nice and the owners are very friendly and helpful also there are some nice views across the surrounding countryside.0
