We are going to be travelling to York Rowntree site in a few weeks time.

Any recommendations what route to take from Aberdeenshire to York.

AA route planner is putting us via Glasgow down the M74 then cutting off at Penrith then joining the A1 further down. However work collegues are talking about going down via Edinburgh/Newcastle.

Never driven down to this area before so any comments appreciated.

We will be driving a motorhome.

Thank you :-)

Both routes are ok. You will need to be aware of usual traffic hold ups on A1 as it goes around Newcastle/Gateshead at certain times, and there are major roadworks near Catterick /Scotch Corner, so either route won't be trouble free. Depends to a certain
extent on time of travelling. Same with A64 up to York, this is a major holiday route, so can get busy.

Or if you wish to avoid the congestion at the two sets of roadworks turn off the A1 onto the A19 at seaton burn then just follow the A19 straight down to the york outer ring road i use this route when going to edinborough area and find it much quicker  and
the tyne tunnel is cheap for cars and caravans as well.

Yup, that's another option! We often use A19 as well.

Tyne Tunnel charges are up now too £1.60, for a caravan/car. If you go via the A19, then stay in the correct lane south bound when going over the Stockton flyover. When you get ovet this flyover people are tempted to move over to the right h/side lane, DO
NOT move over, keep straight ahead, this is the A19. When you get close to Thirsk, the York road bears off to the left, still the A19. This takes you all the way down to York outer ring road. We use this route a lot, misses out the roadworks on the A1. Enjoy
    your trip to York.

Never done that as a single trip but I have driven all the roads concerned. My view is the route via Edinburgh will work out shorter although the route South of Newcastle can be very slow. I would go along with using the A19 although I would follow that
onto the A1 if going to Rowntree as it will be easier to reach the suggested route to the site from the Ring Road by turning right and then using the A64 when you meet it as going left at the ring road is a very slow route.
