We have driven the route a couple of times except the bit at the very start which I assume you know well anyway. There is no problem with the route although it gets a bit slow after Morton.

A bit since we were there but you are within easy walking distance of the town centre and plenty of decent eating places there.

Steve (or Julie as the case may be!) - there are plenty of good eateries in Cirencester itself and if you don't want to drive back it is an easy walk into the town, which also saves you the problem of finding somewhere to park!

But for a special treat the answer has to be The Bell at Sapperton, an award winning pub serving excellent food and good real ale and wines. Sadly, though, it would involve one of you driving back to the site.

The Crown at Ampney Crucis is also good as is the Village Inn at Barnsley and the pub at Coln St Aldwyns is always very busy, though I can't vouch for the food there.

Hope that helps and enjoy yourselves, it's a lovely site to stay on. Happy

SteveJulie, what sort of food are you looking for?  We hae stayed at Ciren a number of times and could probbly make further recommendations dependent upon what you are looking to eat and also a budget.  For instance there is a superb Michelin starred hotel
I can recommend outside of Malmesbury, or in Ciren itself an equally wonderful Thai Restaurant.

Two restaurants i can recommend in Cirencester are Jesse's and Made by Bob. Neither will break the bank and both are within walking distance of the site.

We go to Cirencester a lot, often walk to the Tunnel Inn at Coates( out on the Tetbury road), at lunchtime. Good pub food that won't break the bank for a special occasion. It's quite popular and there's a good outside seating area too.

No chance of parking a caravan up in the lane to the site. It's used by regulars who park there and walk into town. Which route are you using to get to Cirencester?

The good thing about the site is that it is a simple walk into town. When the park is open it is an attractive stroll in to town but you can also walk into the town in about 15 minutes via the main entrance and out onto the road.

There are lots of pubs and restaurants in Cirencester so you can look them up in Trip Advisor etc. and you can walk back after a few drinks.

Steve - there's really no way you can park up on the actual approach to the site. But on the A429 between Bourton on the Water and Cirencester there are a couple of longish lay-bys you could use. What time are you aiming to arrive at the site?

was hoping at around 10.30-11.00 am im wanting to miss friday traffic by setting off early. was hoping there was some laybys on the a429 just as you get onto it off the m69/a46 so i could stop and have a sandwich drink and let the dog stretch there legs
then possibly stop closer to the site

Steve - from South Yorkshire, I'd be setting off about 9:00 am after much of the work traffic has gone. Should take you about 3.5 hours.

Getting there at 10:30am would mean that you'd be driving through the heaviest traffic.

Also, personally i would go M1, M42, M5, A417 - it's slightly longer but quicker as it misses that long run down the A429 which would be really tedious (although pleasant views).

You could easily stop on the M5 services.

Only thing I don't like on the A417 is the steep gradient up to Birdlip.

There Is an equally steep, but much shorter section, on the A429 at Fossebridge. The main problem with Birdlip is when you get stuck behind a lorry. Although 3 lane, you are a bit close to HGV's tearing down the hill to use it. Mind you in my old petrol
engined car I used to hate it, always worried about comming to a stop on the gradient, because of a queue at the round about.

We often use this route Ian, it is good. Although less so than before they altered the southbound services at Strensham. These can now be problematical around lunch time, as much of the caravan section is now shared with HGV's and the 417 junction is north
of the new Gloucester services. The good thing about the route is you can make a late decision, depending on mood, to use the 429. Turn left onto the M40  towards London, rather right on M42 towards M5. If you were going to use the A429 anyway, this also avoids
the A46 around Coventry, which I dislike.

Well I bet that's really cheered Steve & Julie up! I think, knowing they were coming for the first time and celebrating their anniversary, I might have been a bit more tactful and kept my pals' opinion to myself rather than risk spoiling their holiday! Sad

Hopefully it won't put them off too much M. We find it a delightful town. Particularly the market place, which has a very good weekly market. Walking in the Abbey grounds is very pleasant, as is the Roman amphitheatre. Like all towns, small and large there
are bits that are less than desirable. However, in general Cirencester seems to have less than most.

Agree Steve, we also think Cirencester a pleasure to visit. It is full of history and fine buildings blended in with a thriving comunity and town full of little arcades, where you can  discover some really fine independent traders. It also has plenty of
eateries and pubs offering good value food and drink.....SmileCool

    Don't know if this
    link
will work but I think it shows the town in a good light. Its difficult having a secondhand report on a place, far better relying on first hand experience. Been there a couple of times and thought it very nice. There is a bit more to it than
    just the shopping area.

I think sometimes that people can go to a place during bad weather (or something else goes wrong while they are there) and are then left with a bad impression of the place. The opposite happens when it's nice weather and everything goes well.

We enjoyed our stay at Cirencester a couple of years ago.....despite our gas regulator becoming blocked and needing replacement during our stay there.

Cirencester is the only site / town we have visited more than once. We go for the Cotswold show in early July. We were there this year and enjoyed it yet again. I did notice one or two shops had closed down since last year and there was a lot of road works
around the market square and Abbey but it didn’t detract from the visit.

It's interesting isn't it, the only CC site we have been on since joining is Cirencester.  We went there 2 times last year and I've booked for us to go back for my Birthday and between Christmas and New Year.
